Well, as long as she pulls it off, I'm cool with it I guess. I'd prefer someone who actually had that look naturally though.

I shall just sooth myself with how much I like their pick for Peeta I guess.

Yep, he was in a movie with Miley Cyrus last year and it had bad acting all over the place but he really stood out. And not in a good way either.
I haven't got my hopes up for him but hopefully he'll do well enough not to disappoint.

Would you kill me if I pointed out that Peeta is also photoshopped? He's naturally dark-haired, and I've seen very few brown-to-blonde dye jobs that look reasonable.

See a brown-to-blonde I don't mind and that's quite a bit different than taking someone with olive skin and making them white.

Blonde from brown can be done without too much difficulty. My hair's dark enough now that I look brunette half the time, but I certainly dye to blonde well enough. It's largely a matter of getting the tone of blonde right. Somehow it seems more important with blonde than brown. At least with my skintone it does anyway.

You are aware that white people can have olive skin as well, right? This particular actress doesn't have the right undertones, but the amount of people who are claiming whitewashing are a little tiresome. Barring mass immigration to the Appalachians (or this particular part of the Appalchians, based on clues given by the text) between now and the time of the story, the likeliest sources of olive skin are Cherokee or Italian ancestry, and the Cherokee population is declining. Hispanic comes third, assuming no other white background has olive skin.

Really, the amount of physical "wrongness" is about equal with both castings- Lawrence has light hair, the wrong skin tone and is of average height instead of being petite. Hutcherson has dark hair, the wrong eye colour, and the wrong body type. :)

Olive skin is also typically found around the Mediterranean. So that also adds Greek and Italian as well as several others I would imagine.

I wasn't trying to make a big cry of whitewashing so much as being disappointed at her lack of skin tone. Olive skin has such a great richness to it after all and it's rather part and parcel of how I view Katniss in my mind.

I'm also going to be honest in that this is the first I've seen of the people being cast. I have no idea who they are or what they've been in as I don't follow a lot of movies/tv shows really.

Oh no. I wasn't responding so much to your specific comments and more the grumblings I'm hearing about how they didn't cast an "ethnic" actress. Getting Katniss's skintone would have been nice, but I see it as on-par with the other casting-not-to-character-specifications because the whole Not White thing is purely fan speculation.

In short olive skin tone =/= minority, and certain subsects of the fandom's focusing on that particular issue when there are equally "egregious" discrepancies is tiresome.


I realised after posting that the comment was a bit terse. I've had a couple of casting conversations recently where I feel like I have to say the same things repeatedly or be taken completely out of context and I think I took it out here, forgetting that not everybody here has heard the same arguments from both sides a hundred times. So I'm sorry about that. :)
