I can understand if you don't want to give your friend criticism because she might take it the wrong way, but if she can't take you being helpful, her novel probably isn't worth it :|

This is what I came here to say. When a kid draws a crappy picture, you tell him how good it is, because he's a kid, you're not expecting pro-level work. When someone actually wants the thing they're working on right now to be quality, you tell them what's wrong with it so they can fix it. If they can't handle it, that means they've never been able to handle it, and they've never learned how to improve through critique.

A lot of my friends (and myself) are aspiring writers. And we're also adults who can look at things objectively. Makes for good stuff all around.
