I totally hear you on this. I listened to "Winter" several times b4 it clicked with me as well, when my depression was going from mere bottomless sadness to Awful, and my Dad was being really stubborn and going out of his way to not acknowledge that things were really not going well for me.

The moment that it clicked, I was in a computer lab, and it was all I could do to not put my head down and bawl buckets.

There is just something about the moment when a song (with or without lyrics) echoes what is in your own head.
