I was introduced to Hetalia with the synopsis "it's a show where the nations of the world are personified and they get into shenanigans based on historical events and trivia" or something like that, so I was instantly sold because my sense of humor is such that I love jokes based on culture shock and the like. So I wasn't particularly thinking about how Germany would be handled because I was excited to see what did get brought up, but I was extremely impressed with how Germany was handled. I do enjoy FUNimation's dub, too, but the one thing I really don't like about it is that they automatically hit the well of Nazi jokes.

But yeah, I adore Germany to the point that my major goal in life is to move there. I get really huffy really fast about people making "aren't all Germans Nazis?" comments and the like. But I see nothing whatsoever wrong with his portrayal in Hetalia (aside from the dub).

Yeah, I've only watched a few episodes of the dub and the only thing I really like about Germany in it is the accent they gave him, because it makes me laugh. I think the voice fits, but the translations/changes aren't the best.

I'm actually going to be in Germany next year. :) I got a Fulbright Grant to go teach English over there, so I'm super stoked. I don't know if I could live there for the rest of my life, since I'm pretty attached to the people I know in the US but I've been to Germany twice already and I absolutely love it.

Yeah, I like some of what they've done with him but I wish the Nazi stuff wasn't there. Things like the "Herr Stick" deal were pretty great, though.

So. Jealous. It'll take me a while to get to go back, it doesn't help that I have no interest in teaching. I want to give guided tours at a museum or something. Ideally Neuschwanstein. But I need to go through college for things like. You know. Actually learning German. Before that.

They offer Fulbright grants for research, too, but I don't know what the language requirements are for those and I'm sure they're harder to get than the teaching positions.

lol, and yeah learning the language would probably help. It took me like six years to feel comfortable speaking German, but it mostly took that long because I was in the US learning it. I bet you could pick up a lot if you lived there for a bit. :)

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'll just have to see when the time comes, but that's cool info to have! Thanks~

Yeah, I'm kind of in an unfortunate position in that my high school didn't offer German, lol living in a tiny town in the Midwest fucking sucks. I am pretty good with learning languages, though, and I did manage to get one German class at a local college by jumping through several hoops and it came to me much easier than French, so I'm not too worried.

[identity profile] easilyentranced.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, high schools not having German bums me out, since I'm hoping to teach at one when I come back. My tiny town in the Midwest had it, but it's one of the first languages to get cut and I'm pretty sure the program at the my old high school is dying.

It's cool to hear that you're so interested in German and Germany! Even though you'd never be my student, it's nice to know someone thinks German's cool. :)

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it breaks my heart how languages are treated in general. I love French, too, and we have the coolest French teacher ever. Only other option is Spanish ofc. And even with those, in my junior year the French and Spanish teachers had to have a battle with the guidance department because they wanted to axe the levels above 3 for foreign language =|. I think our French teacher threatened to quit or something to get guidance to change their minds. Since some of our diploma programs require so many years of foreign language, it really wouldn't be cool to have no option but Spanish, and getting a new French teacher, or some other language teacher, wouldn't be easy.

I don't get why it's so underappreciated, either. Such a beautiful language. My French class did a trip to Europe that I went on, it was always France + one other country and that year it was Germany. I was only there for two days but fell completely in love. tbqh I think I was in love after two hours.

[identity profile] easilyentranced.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've heard some nasty things about what schools want to do with language programs. Like they want to cut all the upper levels (or in some cases all levels) and have them taught exclusively online with something like Rosetta Stone. Gross. I mean, Rosetta Stone can teach you some stuff, but it's just not the same.

I think there are just a lot of misconceptions about German. Most people don't realize how beautiful and soft it really is. They just think about Hitler or Arnold Schwarzeneggar and assume that everyone's really harsh and mean. ...Even though those two are both Austrian-born, which isn't to say that all Austrians speak like that either, but the dialect certainly is different.

That's so awesome that you got to see Germany on a French class trip! I hope you do get to go back some day and that it's just as awesome as it was before. It really is a lovely place.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's really sickening. Rosetta Stone is a nice tool for people who can't access a proper class for whatever reason, but it's not a replacement. I really hate America's attitude about foreign cultures...=|.

Seriously. The dialect isn't the same at all. Hell, Austrian German is gorgeous, too, actually. I have a recording of Kiss the Girl from The Little Mermaid in Austrian German and it's absolutely gorgeous all the way around. But yeah if you are listening to Adolf Hitler or a star of action movies, of course it's going to sound rough and harsh. Personally I think it's rough in a really sexy way more often than not. Listening to Peter Fox music gives me shivers. The good kind of shivers.

Thanks, I am sure that I will because I sure as fuck am not giving up.
