Surely you jest? Watchman is one of the most profound contemporary novels I can think of. (You know it's a piece of art when it's discussed as an actual piece of literature rather than just another graphic novel.) So there's no shame in Having A Lot Of Feelings about it. It's well known for giving people feelings.

Re: the opening — I still think it's one of the best movie intros I've ever seen, and it makes me wibbly.

ME TOO!!

That intro makes me cry like nothing else. The rest of the film, I feel generally 'meh' about, but the intro dear God! Gets me every time.

I think its the song/imagery combined that does it for me; beautiful yet completely tragic.

Anon, do not feel alone; I'll fully admit that I bawled like a little bitch during that opening montage.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-21 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That opening segment of Watchmen was brilliant. It made everything that came after that much more disappointing, but I can't fault you for your opinion on that part.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2011-04-21 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That intro is the best part of the movie, and I don't mean that in a snotty way. Everything about it is perfect. Just plain gorgeous.

Not gonna lie, the second and third times I saw that movie in theaters were just for that montage. The song was just perfect for it.
fahrbotdrusilla: ([wm] the past even the grimy parts)

[personal profile] fahrbotdrusilla 2011-04-22 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I had a friend who talked up the movie to me after she first saw it exclusively due to the montage.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely love the way they handled the opening to Watchmen. The cinematography, sound and song choice, etc... It gets me every time.

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
It's actually the most perfect film opening I've ever seen. It gives a lot of the backstory for the Minute Men and introduces the evolution of the Crime Busters flawlessly. The film itself wasn't perfect, but damn if that opening didn't hit every mark.

[identity profile] redstapler.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
If your reaction to that sequence is wrong, I don't want to be right.

I've said the same thing to many people and have rarely heard disagreement.

[identity profile] deth-pinion.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Dude. Seriously?

Ok, so the MOVIE may not be that profound, but the novel pretty much changed comic book history. I've written two research papers on it.

So... uh... should not be a secret. At. All.

And I think anyone will agree with you that the opening is amazing and artfully done. I definitely get all choked up.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I concur wholeheartedly.

[identity profile] okapifeathers.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, it's probably one of my favorite movie moments of all time.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's one of the best intros ever made. :P
ext_6866: (WTF?)

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
It's my impression that the main point of Watchmen fandom is that it's the most profound story ever.

[identity profile] likeatruck.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
That opening sequence was phenomenal. You're definitely not alone. :)

"Zach Snyder makes fandomsecrets now?"

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I wondered way back before I saw the movie how in the world they were going compress freakin' Watchmen into a movie, and part of it was all of the details and plot points. There is so much going on and it's hard to decide what should get the chopping block.

This montage, however? It did the impossible. I was floored how perfect it was, and how great a job it did with setting up the movie. It went over a lot of detail in a short time, and told the audience who hadn't read the comic the important things they needed to know.

To top it all off, it was beautifully done. This intro is one of the best I've ever seen.

[identity profile] immortality.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
It really is a great intro.

[identity profile] lady-wormtongue.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agree, that opening is an extraordinary piece of filmmaking. Somehow it's able to set up the backstory in a way that anyone can understand, while throwing in little tidbits for the fans... like a little tender moment between the two gents in my icon XD The whole thing makes me grin and b'awww every time.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-22 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way, anon.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-22 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
The girl who puts the flower in the musket is the scene that gets to me.

[identity profile] archerstar.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's one of the most perfect montages in film history.

It's just...it evokes so much emotion and it's so cinematographically beautiful. I love it.

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think the intro was one of the better parts of the movie. But damn was it sad. I can't think about what happened to the lesbian hero without tearing up--oh damn it, gotta get me some tissues. :(
