Frankly, I find all this obsession with kinks and slash and porn... disturbing. Most people I met in fandom seem to be 'fans' not because they simply like/love the book/thhe movie, but only because the book/show is a material they will write porn about. Very rarely I met someone who is just a fan for the sake of being a fan.

There are some straight-up homophobic slash writers/readers out there that don't actually care about the character's orientation, it's all about getting off on the sort of formulaic wonders of slashfic.
(And one of the reasons I love Jooster fandom, incidently, is because it's a corner of fandom largely free from those types. For every smutfic there's another one that is all about Jeeves and Bertie dealing with the mundane troubles of being a homosexual couple)

Not everyone who ships slash is like that, obviously, but there's a not-small collection of them who view slash as a kink, and nothing more.

When I ship slash, it's not about gay rights OR two hot guys fucking, it's about me thinking that two guys, hot or not, would be a good/cute (in terms of how they act, not look)/interesting/compatible couple. The same reason I would ship a het ship.

I mean, they're not *bad* to have around fandom, but they do sorta contribute to the whole porno takeover of fandom. Which, depending on your tastes, isn't a bad thing. (And quite possibly a good one.) I like hot porn as much as the next person, but at the same time, the fact that it's getting harder and harder to find long, plotty genfics in general is kinda annoying. (Although that might just be my fandom history-I've been in a bunch of fandoms that are older than dirt, (like, started back in the BBS days) and as such have a lower ratio of PWP/plotty lengthy ones. So when I get into newer fandoms, it's a bit jarring.)
But slash is definitely a kink for some people, and is definitely over-represented in some corners of fandom. Other corners are over-represented in het, but it really depends on where you frequent-if you're only used to certain bits of fandom, then, yeah, I can see why you'd class slash in with porn and kink in general, because there are some fandoms where it seems nearly all the slash is just porn, not about the relationship itself.
