My first exposure to them was when my mom brought some back from a trade show her exhibit company did booths for some time in the nineties. I think there are other companies that make similar products at the time, too, because I remember a much larger egg that she brought me that had a plastic toy ring inside (not a flimsy one either, like, hard plastic that looked like resin or something) and I LOVED that thing.

ETA: Holy crap I didn't realize until I read that Wiki article that they were banned. I hope that family didn't get in trouble for carrying them in their store. Also:

On January 10, 2011, it was reported that a Kinder egg was seized from a woman's car during a random inspection while entering the United States from Canada. She was informed that bringing the egg into the United States could result in a $300 fine

Wow, I would never have thought that Überraschungseier would be dangerous. Especially because I know how popular there are in German, Italia and some other countrys.

Btw, my brother-in-law is such a guy who is a little bit crazy about the toys. He must have every new set. *eyes roll*
