I've heard Tarantino refer to the climax where they shoot each other as the consummation of their relationship, so.. there's that? I'd say their interaction is kind of an anti-romance. So considering the flip side of that, if the war hadn't happened, possibly they could have been happy together. I kind of view them like Amon Goeth and Helen Hirsch from Schindler's List- there's a connection there, but the war makes it all warped and dark and ultimately impossible.

Wait, I might not be understanding which characters these are. Are those pairings where the woman is Jewish and the guy is a Nazi?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I think these pairings are impossible because they involve a Jewish woman and a Nazi soldier. Only in a world where all the horrors of the Holocaust and WWII did not happen and the insidious prejudice against Judaism by various other cultures did not exist would these pairings be possible.
