I don't really see River as being exactly the same as the Doctor, she certainly has Doctor-ish qualities. But, especially when comparing her to 11, they're rather different.

11 is a huge bumbling professor type, and I pretty much never see River act like a ditz at all. I think that's why I prefer 11 to her, I don't like characters that are constantly trying to prove how kick ass they are every single second.

Well most of the hate I've seen about her started at her first appearance, when 10 was still around. And she's a LOT like Ten. So that's why I was always like o.O when people would bash her.

And it's not just the overt personality that reminds me of the Doctor. It's the undertone of the Doctor himself, not a specific incarnation, that makes them so similar. Brilliant, mysterious, ass-kicking, dashing off at a moment's notice, doing first and asking questions later. They're so much alike, I don't know how people can miss it. Yea, 11 isn't as arrogant as River, I'll admit that. But he's got his own brand of cockiness. It's because, as you said, he's got a bumbling professor persona that buffers it. 10 has his endearing lovable dork persona that buffered his arrogance most of the time too (except at the end). Now that I think about it, River is like the love-child of 10 and Captain Jack haha.

Well maybe her being the lovechild of Captain Jack and 10 is why I'm not as into her, Captain Jack actually bothered me A LOT when he first appeared and it took me some time and several rewatches to get attached to him.

I don't disagree with some of what you're saying, but like I said I think there are a lot of ways in which they are different. Even with 10 that dorkish quality kind of sets them apart. Maybe if River had a few quirks and wasn't just always making fun of the Doctor for his, I'd be a little more attached to her.

I'm honestly a little different from fandom in the fact that she didn't bother me right away, I liked her in series 4 but for some reason she seemed a little bit more well rounded back then. I still don't full on hate her but she was getting on my nerves in series 5.

I watched Torchwood first (yes, I know. ALL out of order with things haha) and I didn't really like Jack at all in the beginning either. He grew on me though.

I agree. I liked her much more in series 4 (even though I still love her). I'm putting that down to Moff caring more about telling than showing so her "spoilers" thing (which I loved in series 4) kinda becomes all she is. He really played up the "River is so mysterious. Look at her, being mysterious. See how much she loves using it to piss you off?" angle, while RTD was a lot better at saying "this woman is important. She really wishes she could tell you why and it's breaking her heart that she can't. But you still need to trust her."

River from series 4 is the one I think of whenever people talk about her.

That's part of my problem with River. We already have an arrogant know-it-all time traveler, we don't need a distaff version. We've also seen the Dcotor be awesome for decades, so his arrogance was earned. River came out of nowhere and proceeded to tell us how great she was and we're supposed to take her at her word. I don't. I still think she's just some con artist who's playing the Doctor in a very long con.

You probably didn't see the later comment I posted so I'll just say it again here:

A big part of the reason that I'm so amused by River and love her so much is because she's exactly what I imagine everyone else in the world (those who aren't his companions) see the Doctor as. This guy who comes out of no where, thinks he's better than everyone else, has all this information that no one has any idea how he got, and just disappears in the blink of an eye whenever he feels like it. We see River the way the rest of the world must see the Doctor; no insight into her life or her past and she knows things but can't really say how she knows them and she's frustrating and annoying.

It's kinda like "Midnight" when everyone gets mad at the Doctor because he pretty much says he's better than them and they call him out on it. They pretty much say "we don't know who the hell you are or where you came from. You just showed up here and now you're telling us what to do? Who do you think you are?" And that's exactly how I see River. Because I can reconcile her with the greater world's view of the Doctor, I like it. It's great seeing the Doctor finally have to see the world from the point of view of someone stuck running on normal time.
