That's why I never get the versions they change it so that she's not asking to go to the ball and picking lentils out of the ashes in order to go. Her stepmother winds up saying she can't go anyway, but Cinderella's being active. She's not passive in the Grimm version or many other versions. She was made more passive in other versions.

But imo it's not teaching the lesson you said anyway, except by accident. I think it's more about wish fulfillment for somebody who wants to be noticed as being a wonderful when everyone is jealous of her rather than trying to say anything about abuse.
