Unsurprisingly, FPS fandoms are male-dominated, and 99% of the discussion revolves around whether or not a certain weapon/class/map is broken, whether or not hackers are ruining everything, whether or not New FPS Game du Jour is the next "CoD Killer", and how much we all hate camping faggots and n00bs.

The 1% of discussion about game design, philosophy, meaning, and plot is usually had with the few other female players.

That said, I always get a good chuckle out of female fans who think male-dominated spaces are drama-free paradises of logical discussion and intellectual depth where no one holds grudges and everyone rides unicorns and shits sunshine. Then they wander over into said spaces, get called a fat whore cunt and informed that someone is presently going to come over to their house and rape them and their mother, and they flee crying. Or in non-FPS zones are constantly hounded for attention and if it is not reciprocated become the targets of increasingly passive-aggressive Nice Guy neckbeards (who still don't think they could possibly be good players, and must be on the site to hook up with men - why else would she dare mention her gender, everyone knows male is default that attention whore).

Oh yes, a good chuckle indeed.

I love how you just described my experience almost exactly, and yet these were two completely different fandoms. I see a common denominator here, and I don't think it's the lack of wimmenz!

On the topic of game fandoms and harassment of female fans, I assume you've seen this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQnIJ-ljctk), but on the off chance you haven't, I'll link you so you can feel better about life as I do every time I watch it. (Language so NSFW btw.)

Oh, and for the record, the thing that ultimately made me leave UC Gundam (aside from a few of my friends on LJ who like it, etc) fandom was a huge cesspool of drama started by male fans against a female fan. So drama free, these men!

Um. Your personal experiences =/= fact. I've been in several male-dominated fandoms - video games as well as other media - and pretty much never witnessed any drama. The discussion between men was usually about gameplay, plot, characterization, etc, while most of the women cooed over ships and how 'hawt' the male characters are. Shipping (and the shipwars that come with it) is really the most annoying part of female dominated fandoms; most male fans don't seem to care about it all, which is nice. I've never been called any names or pressured for attention either. Again, your experience =/= fact, so you can stop ~chuckling~ now.

Um, your personal experiences =/= fact any more than mine are.

I'm in several male-dominated fandoms myself - video games as well as other media - and I've witnessed plenty of drama, from the internet-spanning OMG NO DEDICATED SERVERS I HATE ACTI FOREVER to CoD and Battlefield fanboys shit-slinging each other for years to tears of rage every time anyone identifies themselves as female on /v/ to any time anyone says the word "clip" on /k/ or mentions France's role in WWII.

Oh wait, these happen quite literally all the time and you could go to any gaming or historical or philosophical or equipment-based forum and find a thread full of drama on exactly this right now. They are fact!

And if you think fanboys don't partipate in shipping wars, you've never been in the FFVII or Evangelion fandoms, comrade.

So yes, still chuckling.
