at least for me it was that way.
every time someone in fandom pointed out a supposedly "aww"-scene for him ... i just broke out into laughter (see above. even with the corresponding face! every time!).
But I have that more often than not, so maybe my humor-machine is broken or something

I thought it was nice of him he tried to protect Nepeta, but then I lol'd at the rest of what happened. Even Hussie himself basically said he was just a big joke and had a fitting death.

Personally, I find a socially awkward teenaged boy with unrequited crushes on multiple people and fetishes he doesn't quite know what to do with? Completely adorable. I mean, seriously, if Eq was a real kid, I would give him hugs and lectures on SSC. But if you wouldn't that's okay! Because people have different tastes! See fans and non-fans of Vriska and Eridan and even Kanaya, for god's sake.

Whether or not he was meant to be sympathetic, that awkwardness and his weirdness won me over to him as well. I'm kind of sad about the fact that he's really unlikely to come back but at least, as your icon says, he died ... happy...

Yeah, he's just. So endearingly terrible. And he's endearingly terrible in a way that wants to please the people he loves (not terrible in the abusive way of Vriska or Eridan), and while he ascribed to the hemospectrum in name, he certainly didn't do so in spirit, not the way-- again-- Eridan did, where he insulted Sollux repeatedly about his blood color. He even expressed his doubts about it, with how wonderful and beautiful Aradia is and all that.

And while I am also sad he is dead (though happy he enjoyed dying!) and him reappearing doesn't seem likely... you probably can't hurt someone by hugging them while in a dream bubble. Eq<>Nep cuddles forever yeaaaaah

"Endearingly terrible" is the right way to put it. He's awful in a lot of ways, but he gave the impression that he was sorting out so much about himself and his worldview that the awfulness wasn't close to the last word on him.

I legitimately fail to understand why 'sympathetic' is so very necessary in order to like characters.

Also forcing sympatheticness on unsympathetic characters makes me incredibly angry.

I generally find 'sympatheticness' required for me to like the character themselves-- but it does not matter a flying monkey in regards to me the liking the concept or point of character.

Then again, I like Equius but actively loathe Eridan, yet sympathise with neither. I guess this means I find it easier to appreciate characters for their traits despite their bigotry rather than others despite their sexism? Quite the opposite of the bulk of the LJ fandom, it looks like :/

To be fair, Equius is a bigot. Eridan is a bigot and a sexist. It's not just 'pick your poison' here.

And don't forget that troll bigotry against blood colour is something humans will never have to experience. Yeah, their castes have overtones of class systems and racial segregation, but no-one has ever been considered unsuitable to marry nobility because their blood is too red, and no-one has ever been spat on in the street for being a red blood living in a blue-blood neighbourhood. Troll bigotry is pretty abstract from a human perspective as a result.

An awful lot of humans have to put up with Eridan's attitudes towards women, though.

Okay, I see this claimed a lot, but how is Eridan sexist? He's an entitled bastard to Fef, but he's an entitled bastard to everyone. Unless I'm missing something, he treats women exactly the same as he treats men.

It seems more like possessiveness to me. Fef has a special place in his douchebaggery but Eridan treats most of the girls the same as he does the guys. It's not that Fef's a girl, it's that she's his and he'd probably do the same thing if she were a guy.

(And he didn't kill her for going out with someone else or else he would have flipped his shit way before he did. He kills her for attacking him, there's a difference.)

Nah man, that part was definitely meant to make you go 'aww, Equius and Nep are kinda cute' even if you didn't like them before. Then BAM! they die :(

On that note, walkaround + animation is such a good way of immersing the reader in the story. Equius: Seek the Highb100d and Seer: Descend were so effective, I love them! Homestuck just keeps one-upping itself :)

I cared about him because Nepeta cared about him and I had some sympathy for her, but nothing in the canon ever made me sympathize with him. There was one fanfic about him and Vriska the ways their respective positions in Troll society have fucked them up that pulled it off, which leads me to believe he could have been sympathetic if his issues were treated as seriously by the comic as Vriska's are. The fact that Hussie chose not to go that route makes me think that yeah, he was never meant to be sympathetic.
