It's a musical about "Pippin," aka Pepin the Hunchback, son of Charlemagne, the Roman emperor who essentially turned Christianity from a cult of heretics into a legally and culturally acceptable religion.



That's a video of the musical highlights of the show. There are no spoilers in it, I watched the whole thing to make sure. The musical came out in the early 70's and is very typical of that time -- it takes a historic subject and gives it a modern twist. Very little of the musical looks or sounds anything like it might be based on the life of a guy who lived in the year ~790 A.D. Another thing you really can't see from this video is that the music is stuffed full of very adult humor. It's absolutely hilarious. My mom made me sit through it when I was 9 and I was so bored because it was all totally incomprehensible to me. I saw it again as an adult and it quickly became one of my top 3 all time favourites.

I won't point-blank explain the secret to you, I'll let you look at that video and decide for yourself if you want to watch the musical and find out. I don't know of anywhere you can watch it online but it a live recording of the show from the original cast run IS on DVD (bonus fun fact: my mother was in the audience when they recorded it!)

....and hilariously, I got the notification for this reply just as I've been listening to the soundtrack for the past 2 hours.

Some of these songs are like crack to me. I start them and I have to play them on repeat 15 times or more before I get distracted enough to let it move on to another song. XD

Have been away, so only just seen this. :¬} I know that Pippin's a musical about a 7th/8thC French[?] king of that name, but that's it, basically; so the text in the secret intrigued me & still does. :¬) I've read your reply to a later poster, though, & thanks for that - I'd never known exactly what the show dealt with, & it sounds eminently fascinating! :¬)

I never really felt comfortable with the message of that show. What was so bad about him wanting more out of life than living on a farm?

It's not so much a message. The show is based on the life of a real person. He wasn't gonna live on a farm. His dad was the Emperor of fucking Rome. He was rebelling against the pressures of being a prince, not being a farmhand.

Also it was the 1970s, they had a lot of musicals that were really fucking WEIRD versions of whatever they were adapting. See also: Godspell, and Alice in Wonderland the pornographic musical.
