don't know that particular fandom and I haven't seen it in my own, but I have to agree it's not the prettiest coloring I've seen but that's MHO. The red patches make each character look sick and/or feverish to me. ^^;;

Sometimes it looks okay, but... in the examples you gave, it's really overdone. /: especially the top half.

It annoys the hell out of me. People's faces aren't shiny, and it instead makes them look like they have giant zits on their faces.

It started back in 2005, I think. When people still colored their pictures by hand instead of using a computer. Copics (ink brushes) were in, and coloring "bright red patches with white dots" was THE status symbol among copic-users. Especially if you were a manga artist and into yaoi (yaoi mangakas have been doing the same coloring "style" since the dawn of time, only with pastels instead of bright colors).

It wasn't just faces y'know. Toes, elbows, butt-cheeks, shoulders, knees...

So now most artists don't do that anymore. And yet... Nobody told the icon makers it's not cool anymore.

I can't remember who did those icons, but they're horribly familiar and I know I saw them done for another fandom. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought they were ugly as shit. A very light touch of blush is fine, but that weird red-cheek-dot thing looks terrible.

But much like what some people are mentioning, I am definitely on the "faint blush" side. Maybe it's just because my cheeks have a natural blush to them that it bothers me less.

Urgh, you're not the only one.

I don't mind if the character in the icon is supposed to actually be blushing, but if it's just the colouring style? They always look drunk, sick or like they've just been slapped. Otherwise good icons have been ruined by the unfortunate baboon arse effect.
