DEAR SECRET MAKERS WHO:

- Lament how FANDOM IS RUINED FOREVER
- Complain that FANDOM CONSISTS OF A BUNCH OF SHUT-INS WHO WILL NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING
- say that MAKING FRIENDS THROUGH FANDOM IS "DANGEROUS"

I'd like to point out that fandom as a whole has existed since the 1930s and weathered far nastier fights than you can even conceive of; it survived World War II and it survived the continual infighting among fans during the 1940s (seriously you would not BELIEVE some of the wank from back then). I would like to point out that fans back then had many in-person meetups without the internet... and at the same time, there were still many, many fans who never met a single other fan in person and "existed" solely through letters to the editor in fanzines (Harry Warner Jr, who actually wrote the books on fandom history from 1940-1950, was one such fan; he also had a very productive life despite writing several hundred thousand letters and basically being that guy who lives on message boards before there were message boards). Before the internet existed. Fans were writing terrible fanfiction back then - you may have heard of some of the authors: Ray Bradbury, Arthur C Clarke, and Issac Asimov. Hell, Clarke even wrote terrible (though admittedly facetious) self-insert fanfiction about taking over the planet with an itching ray along with his buddies.

Oh, and the arguments about pedophilia and porn in fandom have also been going on that long. Admittedly, the arguments about slashfic didn't really start till the 60s, which most of you actually DID know (thanks, Trek fandom!)

Individual fandoms around individual canons may fade in and out, but fandom itself is older than you, angrier than you, and has been having your arguments longer than you. Get over yoselves. Especially you, Homestuck. I love the canon, I even like the fandom, mostly, but my god this shit is dumb when you put it in perspective. Stop having the same arguments people have been having for seventy goddamn years.

/waits for avalanche of butthurt anons and/or accusations of arrogance

PREACH IT. Oh my god, thank you.

This is a Good Post.

And I think the reason the Homestuck fandom is so caught up in itself is that, for many people, it's their first fandom. The comic had brought a lot of people who usually wouldn't participate in fandom into the fold, which is great, but has also led to a lot of regurgitated wank.

I think that's a reasonable assumption to make, yes. They didn't really deal with the Final Fantasy or Harry Potter or Trek or what-have-you-bullshit yet.

Tbh though there's nothing to be done for it; every new fandom is going to do this for itself. Best one can do is, well, sit in the corner, popcorn.gif and blast "It's All Been Done" loudly on loop.

Hell, Harlan Ellison has been a one-man fandom wankfest since the 1960s and he's still at it. Nothing new under the sun, even if it has gone supernova.

Man I can't wait till I get to the 1960s for this very reason; it seems to have been a flashpoint for epic tableflips.

teal: you are not by any chance dhole on fandom_wank, are you?

That person put up some fine vintage onanism back in the day (such as the New Fandom vs. Futurian stuff, here (http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/1087998.html)) and I found it fascinating reading. More of such would be extremely interesting!

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2011-04-26 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I am not, actually! I have found Dhole's work, and actually that stuff is part of what inspired me to do my current research into early fandom.

If I had a Fandom_Wank account I'd be happy to put up more stuff as I find it; but alas I do not (which is a shame - I have some truly gold stuff about Boskone in the 1980s. Which isn't quite AS vintage but still hilarious. And I'll no doubt have more juicy tidbits soon). For now thought you can check out my blog, http://conventioneering.org - I'm working on a book about the history of conventions, and the blog is where I put stuff I find interesting but which isn't as directly convention-related (also con reports)

Or it will be once the ball is rolling faster on that anyway.
