Well, yeah. You could fail. It's a risk. That's part of the nature of every kind of human action, everything that exposes you or makes you known - you expose your self to criticism and the possibility of failure. The reason to do it, of course, is that action remains deeply human and vital, something intrinsic to our condition as living beings.

The ancient Greeks placed great importance on the notion of Arete - translated as excellence, but also related to the fulfillment of one's potential and the revelation of self. The idea was that only through the doing of great deeds could one be excellent, could one really act out one's self to the fullest extent, and at the same time that this sort of excellence revealed something innate about the character or persona of the actor. Only through taking risks and attempting great deeds could arete be attained, and with it a kind of immortality.

The point, then, is that following your dreams is the only way to be yourself and to live up to your highest potential and to grasp excellence, arete - and that following your dreams is certainly risky, and opens one up and makes one vulnerable but at the same time allows the full exercise and revelation of one's self, of one's character, and the attainment of excellence. It is necessary therefore that we take these risks and strive for this excellence.
