I get this feeling all the time regarding fictional characters and other people's kids I have to take care or look out for. It's terrible. No way I want any of my own though.

I can't tell if my ovaries are responsible (innate maternalness oh boy :/) for this.

OK, can we please stop it with the whole "derp" meme guys

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
It is seriously ableist, on the same level as "retard" or "spaz". Please stop.

Seriously?

That's not sarcasm, either--I've legitimately never heard the term "derp" being criticized as being ableist, and don't actually see why it would be, any more than the term "stupid" or whatever. "Retard" and "spaz" I can see, but...

What, you've never been to a schoolyard where the kids are flapping their hands around and going "derp derp hurrrr" in mocking their mentally disabled peers?

Re: OK, can we please stop it with the whole "derp" meme guys

[identity profile] illimerent.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
No need to get testy with me, I was just asking a question. :/ I still fail to see how the term itself is ableist.

Here you go! (http://www.journalfen.net/community/unfunny_fandom/10611.html)

Dunno how old you are, but I'm 27 and the comments in the second thread at that link (probably mostly made by people around my age or older; that's how the comm skews) rang true for me. If you're significantly younger, maybe usage has shifted somewhat - and if you're not, congrats on growing up in a less-gross environment, I guess. Regardless, that's what the anon was talking about.

Re: OK, can we please stop it with the whole "derp" meme guys

[identity profile] illimerent.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh.

I'm just 18, and I also went to an elementary school where that kinda thing was just not commonplace to begin with. I do think usage has shifted, too, because I've honestly never heard the term used offensively, even online (which is, incidentally, the only place I've ever really seen it used).

God, I'm gonna have to revamp my whole vocabulary at this rate...

Re: OK, can we please stop it with the whole "derp" meme guys

[identity profile] flutingfrenzy.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's actually kind of funny, because until that post it never even occurred to me that anyone wouldn't be aware of the ableist history of the word (because seriously, to me it's almost on the level of "retard"), and this whole time there have been all these people to whom it never would have occurred that it could have an ableist history. I suppose it's a good reminder that we shouldn't necessarily assume malice when people use certain words, and that we should take others seriously when they tell us that words we've used innocently are actually not okay.

But yeah, it is really kind of unreal how many derogatory words in the English language are, in fact, ableist.

I think you're overreacting a bit

This.

This is exactly what a lot of people were talking about on one of the threads above this one...

[identity profile] illimerent.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Why do I find this adorable?

[identity profile] yucari.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
because John is adorable and everything he touches turns adorable.

Clearly.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
My feelings exactly!

[identity profile] forjuicy.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pathetic like that.
Whenever one of the characters talks about their nightmares I just wanna adopt them and hug them forever D:

I seem to remember a secret from way back of someone wanting to be Jade's dad.

You two should hook up.

That's how I feel about Dave. I want to mother all the cynicism out of him. :
