I think some marginalized people feel bad for all the likely merely uninformed 'privileged' people who constantly get jumped on by social justice advocates who are taking things too far. For example, irl, if you call someone/thing 'retarded', no one will think twice about it. Online, some advocate will see that, and start calling you an insensitive idiot for offending some hypothetical person. Ideally, someone could just point out "Hey, calling something retarded is offensive and not cool. It be nice if you could not use that word in a negative context," but that's not what always happens. Some people are going too far, and sometimes neglect that words have different meanings in different dialects, and some words have evolved past their clinical meanings (for example, 'lame' is almost always initially assumed to mean 'uncool' with many not even knowing that it originally means 'unable to walk').

tldr - Some people just take things too far in the other direction.

It's not our duty to educate bigots. Do you feel proud of yourself, justifying the perpetuation of hatred?

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] grlgoddess.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not trying to justify hatred, just trying to re-explain what I think the OP is saying in order to clarify for the above anon.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
no you're justifying hatred and you should just disappear from the internet

actually it'd be cool if you disappeared from society too, but i guess you have to get your cheetos somehow

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ahhhh, I understand now.

Carry on.

Aww, you're cute!

Except that saying to someone, "hey, it's wrong to use that word, and here's why" is a lot more effective and a lot less likely to perpetuate hatred than saying, "shut up, you're a bigoted piece of shit."

Here's the thing: if you ever want to actually effect any sort of change in the society at large, then you are going to have to educate people. You are going to have to change hearts and minds. Some people are filled with hate, and there's nothing that can be done to change them -- but a lot of people are passive with their prejudice (which, as you may have noticed, is rather easy to do in a society with institutionalized *isms), and don't even realize that they're doing something wrong until someone tells them. Those people need to be woken up, not insulted and dismissed.

lmao i didn't think anyone would be this naive

guess i was wrong

In the off-chance that you aren't trolling (ha!), is that because you think there's no hope to actually change anything, or because you think that only active prejudice is possible?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
both

Exactly. If you educate someone, you have a chance of changing their minds. If you insult them, they'll just keep on being a bigot. So what's your goal? To get people on your side or to make all people in your group look mean and closed-minded?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Way to miss the point.

And no, it's never our duty to educate people. But then again, it's unproductive to go "LALALA I'LL NEVER TELL". Ignorance isn't necessarily an act of malice, and those of us who do understand the issues can clarify things to people who are ignorant if we so choose. It's only natural for people who see ignorant (not bigoted) people getting dog-piled on to say "maybe it would help if someone tell them why they're wrong". That doesn't mean they're forcing the duty on us. Never at any point is it ever mandatory for us to do or say anything on the issue when we're on the internet. It's already a space where we can choose to answer or stay silent.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
just because you're ignorant doesn't mean you have to stay ignorant

educate yourself or kill yourself, one or the other

actually both is fine too

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much what I'm saying. Ignorant people shouldn't stay ignorant. How they can overcome that ignorance, on the other hand, is subjective to whoever is seeing whatever argument/wank/dog-pile that is going on. Some may say the ignorant should shut up and google, some may say the ignorant need a helping hand from those who understand the issues. My point is, none are making it a mandatory "duty" for us, so hostility is kind of uncalled for.

Did you know that this attitude is shockingly naive? I didn't until a few moments ago.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-27 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently so. I was so young and naive to think that the oppressed have a choice to educate others if we want! I guess I should go kill myself now, because I'm just as bad as those bigots.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's everyone's duty. Do you think they're going to educate themselves?
