I didn't see it that way. I saw it was youthful/enthusiastic enjoyment of human interaction. More a kind of 'Ah! This is what you call flirting? How marvelous, I shall have to try it!' rather than River's version.

But then again, I'm of the opinion that The Doctor is not a sexual being. I might be in the minority with this opinion - especially in fandom!

I think flirting can be just what you said, a human interaction that's just fun because it is and doesn't have to go anywhere. I don't see the Doctor as a sexual being either, not really, but I still saw him as very flirty sometimes.

Ah, perhaps I should qualify that I find River's version of flirting sexual and she clearly has a level of emotional attachment to the Doctor which, regardless of whether it's actually sexual or faux-sexual, if far above what I believe the Doctor would let himself feel. Although he loves his companions, he is very guarded as a person (possibly because he's had to see so many of them die or leave him) and River just seems so much more... free.

I'm babbling a bit, sorry if you're uninterested!

Ah yes. I definitely don't think she's a future Doctor. I would be very surprised if that were the case.

I can only see the Doctor as a sexual being with other Time Lords. Doctor/Romana or Doctor/Master, sure! Doctor/Companion, not so much. Though I seem to make an exception for Doctor/River.

I think it might be because I was raised on Doctor Who and used to watch it with my dad when I was younger - it's just such an nonsexual programme to me! I always imagine the companions as his friends or, in the case of the earlier series, his adopted children - I can never imagine them as sexual partners.

Same! Can't offer an opinion on Romana, since I just recently got into NuWho and need some time to digest before digging into the classic series, but I initially pegged him as pretty firmly asexual and got all confused in my pants about Ten (because I would go straight for Tennant but it's the Doctor and it would be wrong and and--). And then I hit Sound of Drums and it all made sense.

Doctor/Companion pairings wig me out a little bit because the power imbalance is so very, very built-in. Doctor/River less so, because she keeps him on his toes and the equally-matched power struggle is so totally up his alley, even if she's human.
