The show did so much better with platonic relationships than romantic ones.

I absolutely loved the friendship/family relationships - the Gaang, Sokka/Katara, Zuko/Iroh. But I didn't really care for any of the canon pairings, and thought the show would have been better (it was already fantastic, pretty much only failing in the romance department, which is only a tiny issue) if none of the kids got together, and there was just friendship and crushes with future potential. The main characters are 12-16, they don't need to hook up, and ESPECIALLY establish lifelong relationships at that age.
Like someone said above, I had ZERO problem with Aang and Katara's relationship (liked it even) when they were close friends and he always had a crush on her, and they were slowly becoming more important to one another. When he made a move on her (they were too young, she said she wasn't sure of her feelings, the age difference WOULD be an issue at that age), then I didn't like it. And Zuko/Mai, them getting together in a webcomic or whatever isn't an excuse, their relationship on the show was ridiculous. When we first saw them together, I actually thought the relationship was intentionally shown to be undesirable, an example of how Zuko didn't fit into the Fire Nation, and he was going to move on when he left. Though I will admit I did warm up to it when Mai chose Zuko over Azula.
Wow, I have lots of shipping thoughts for a show I haven't thought about since 2008, haha!
