I don't anymore. it's just an injustice that SPN lives while my beloved soaps are dying.

LOOOL. because soap operas are such great TV.

[identity profile] lovedforaday.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
They were, and still are to many people. Soaps are still salvageable, how many times can Dean cry over Sam?

About the same amount of times that Erika Kane can keep getting married?

You think soaps have any quality at all? Okay.

[identity profile] lovedforaday.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, or they used to. I'd take anything American soaps were producing 20-30 years ago over anything SPN has ever shat out.

But we're not talking about 20-30 years ago. We're talking about now. Those soaps are just recycling drama so very badly and that's a shame. And I feel like soaps, instead of being say misogynist or misandrist, though more the former than the latter, are completely and utterly misanthropic.

[identity profile] lovedforaday.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, that wasn't a fair comparison. yes, supernatural is slightly better than the American soaps still on the air.

Soaps serve a very important role in television though.

They're a great breeding ground for actors, and provide many of them with a steady income. There's plenty of big stars that started on soaps. Not to mention they keep massive production crews in work.

They're designed for a certain demographic though. You are not it. They're not really designed to be "quality" television in the sense of breaking new ground, or doing the sorts of things that lead to critical acclaim, but they are a tradition of broadcasting that have been around for almost a century.

They are designed to be that way, because that's what the audience wants. The problem is even though they have a decent following, it's still more profitable for local affliates to run infomercials instead, and if local affliates aren't going to carry the soaps, there's no money to be made in producing them.

First, I was referring to soaps nowadays. When I say they aren't quality, I mean they're more like fanfiction that has just changed the names of the main characters. Sometimes, they don't even do that. Also, while I agree about the new blood, recently there has been less of that. More soap stars have been switching between soaps than new actors getting on them. Tradition don't mean things have to remain past their prime.

Also, it's not just infomercials that are more profitable, it's also reality tv (Judge Judy, Brown, Mable, etc.)

[identity profile] ianthine9.livejournal.com 2011-04-27 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And there's a definite audience for "fanfiction with the names changed".

Just like there's a definite audience for the shitty romance novels that get released as e-books only that fill up kindles around the world. They're not supposed to be good-they're written that way because that's what the audience *wants*. It's a certain demographic, and soaps play right into it, as do the romance novels that are "fanfiction with new names".

That's not what I mean, frankly. Usually soap do variations on the same themes, but they don't usually do the actual same things as they have before. Like they might pair up a couple again, but then they'll introduce a baby, or it's a plot with someone's sister, or something. I shouldn't have been able to miss a soap for a year, and then find everyone in the basically the same places as before. That's what I mean.

The only one I think should not have been canceled was Guiding Light, since at the very least they tried to update the direction and camera style.
