I tried reading The Hobbit because I was told I should read that before the trilogy. I couldn't make it past the first few pages. Tolkien is a master of world building, writing not as much to me. If it wasn't for the movies, I don't think the series would have gotten as popular as it did.

It was actually already really popular, anon. If you've played an RPG (pen and paper or video games) or read a fantasy novel in the last 50 years, it's probably been influenced by Tolkien in one way or another. In fact, we wouldn't have had Dungeons and Dragons if it wasn't for LOTR.

The movies made it more mainstream, but the novels were already REALLY big.
