That's too bad, because that's some fantastic critique, there. As specific as you like, sensible and to the point. I'd love critique like that, only on my fic (I don't make icons) instead (er, when I get around to posting it).

Unless they're making icons for sharing, though, I wouldn't go to the trouble, since the person probably made them for personal use and doesn't much care for perfection. If they're happy with it why should I get all bothered?

I kind of wish people would critique my personal-use icons sometimes. I'm not very good at photoediting, and I'd love to hear how to improve my stuff so I don't look like a total ass.

I understand the will to make really pretty ones (and it's pretty cool!), but the concept of icon critique always baffled me, especially if it's towards people who don't really care about their aesthetics in the first place.

The "offensive" icon you've got there is playing off the series name (My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute) so yeah, it's offensive to some but it's not just there to target women. I found it amusing but I guess you have to be in on the joke.

I guess it depends? I mean, I can understand getting upset if someone randomly messages you about the personal use icons you've made because...yeah, that's just a tad pushy - but as some of the commenters have said, not everyone would get upset over that. As for the ones that are made to be shared, perhaps try pming them, if you haven't? Crit in a public forum when it hasn't been asked for can put some people on the defensive, and it can make the person receiving it feel humiliated. However, I've found that a lot of people are more laid back if you pm them, and bring it up a little more 'Hey, I saw X and I thought it was good, but I wondered if...' type of format.

Your criticisms are good! Maybe you could set up a comm where people could post their icons and get feedback? It works for fic and vids.

I find a picture I like. I crop to something I think looks good. I resize. Usually I play with colors/contrast a little. Maybe I edit something out of the background or try to bring something into the foreground. Then I sharpen. Then I throw on a border because my icon aesthetics were established over 5 years ago and, gosh darnit, icons should fucking have borders. Then I'm done. The icon is just for me, and I like it. That's really all I care about.

But then, I'm still using some icons I've had on my account for close to 8 years that I think are pretty ugly now because I can't be bothered to redo them, and only have 163 of my 207 icon slots filled (and only regulary use maybe 4), so you probably think I'm nuts anyway.

I welcome your icon crit. I only have 15 slots and I don't want them to be filled with improper crops and bad composition. COME AT ME BRO.

Seriously, I wouldn't mind. You shouldn't be afraid to offer it :) The way some people use betas for fanfic, I think it'd be cool if there was a person to offer their opinion regarding graphic design for things as simple as icons or banners and whatnot.

I didn't know you felt that way about that icon, and I'm sorry it was bugging you. Thank you for your critique, and I'll keep it in mind. Maybe even do that icon over for you. Do you have any more comments you'd like to add? Is there any way I can contact you, by means of out here, or in a PM?

You're mentioning to everyone in general, but please don't think that way about me--I'm open to criticism, and really do appreciate it, and make use of it when it's given. Every bit helps to improve, and really does go a long way. Definitely not a pro by any means, but I do try my best. I thought that people would be open enough in the comments area, but with this, you've brought up a new issue to light.

Maybe there's an HMD-type thing for icons I can use...

Though I think my icons are (arguably) of better ilk than the ones used in your example, I'd still like critique on them from someone, as long as it was the same kind of constructive criticsm. You should make a community or a thread or something so people can post with their icons and you can make suggestions for imrpovement.

Like this one here, I rather enjoy using it, but I have no idea what someone else might think of it. I think it looks pretty rad but if there's something I could fix in future icon endeavors then I'd like to hear about it.

Maybe people aren't open even to the ~nicest criticism~ because you're offering unsolicited criticism on something they don't care about?

Or maybe, just maybe, they have different tastes than you and think that their icons are awesome and that your suggested improvements are fug?

I haven't made any icons in ages, but I remember looking through tutorials and still being a bit confused as to wth I was doing. I wish there was someone around to nudge me in the right direction when I was trying my hand at it. :(
