I think both movies are godawful pieces of trash. Fandom would pretty much murder me as a whole.

You're right though, there's something about the RHPS fandom where they just absolutely can not accept that people don't like their precious masterpiece. The few times I've told people how strongly I dislike it, they went into some frothing frenzy and just about lynched me.

*yawn*

Have you considered the possibility that it might be the "told people how strongly I dislike it" part that's setting them off?

It's one thing to dislike something that someone else likes (or vice versa), but ranting to their face about how awful their thing is tends to get most folks' hackles up.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This is generally a good way to make people forget about all the things they dislike/think are lacking in a work that they are fans of.

I love Shock Treatment. Seriously, really love it.

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I've never watched either. Probably never will.

It's one of the things I keep under my belt to shock people. Like that I haven't watched any of The Matrix Trilogy, Star Wars or Phantom of the Opera.

I always quote lines from Bitchin' in the Kitchen desperately hoping someone would get the reference. No one ever does.

Tell me, spectator...why are we always sooner or later... *g*

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, I'd give it a view.

[identity profile] moonlitdreams20.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I am always impressed when someone has even heard of Shock Treatment, let alone caring whether or not someone likes it better than Rockey Horror.

[identity profile] ecoerrante.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really like RHPS either anon, it's just not to my tastes. -shrugs-

[identity profile] revieloutionne.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like they're such different movies that it's tough to directly compare them.

(Also making the comparison tough is having most of my thoughts about Rocky Horror actually have to do with the production of The Rocky Horror Show I helped stage and the cast/crew of that.)

Shock Treatment is definitely a much better film from an objective "does it hang together/how well was it produced?" standpoint, though. Without the audience participation, RHPS is kind of... campy fluff. Not bad, but not great. (Amusingly, exactly the kind of movie you save for watching with people who can't not talk while watching.)

[identity profile] lionessvalenti.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about comparing them. I LOVE Shock Treatment and I know when I watch it, I keep it very separate from RHPS in my head. It's more of a musical movie that just happens to also be about a couple named Brad and Janet for me.

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen Shock Treatment, but it's on my list to eventually watch. Is it on DVD anywhere, or should I just pirate it?

[identity profile] darlas-mom.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I love them both equally, anon.

...but I think that "Shock Treatment" might have a slightly better soundtrack. (I would rather listen to the song "Shock Treatment" than "Sweet Transvestite." And "Bitchin' In The Kitchen" is easily a million times better than "Damn It Janet.")

I think they're enjoyable for different reasons, though. I could happily watch "Shock Treatment" by myself, but "RHPS" is more fun to watch with other people.

My only real disappointment with "Shock Treatment" is that I like Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon so much better than Cliff De Young and Jessica Harper. (Barry Bostwick's adorable, Cliff De Young is weird-looking. And Jessica Harper's singing voice is just...odd.)

[identity profile] caroxxjane.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, OP, for getting that song stuck in my head again.

*hums quietly*

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Wordy McWord. I love and own and quite literally can not even get through RHPS.

[identity profile] kryss-labryn.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Me, I like 'em both; I like 'em differently. I think ST has a fantastic soundtrack, I must say. Probably time to go see it again...

Hey, if you like ST, have you ever seen Brian de Palma's "Phantom of the Paradise"? 1974, I think; I believe it's online if you look for it. They're kind of similar in a don't-actually-have-anything-but-Jessica-Harper-in-common way, but it's another of my faves, also with some really catchy tunes. :)

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen Shock Treatment yet. Are they're any writers/actors in common?
