I can think of a few boards where this is the case, /d/ and /y/ and /c/. /co/ used to be. /x/ is pretty mellow. /adv/ can have its moments.

But yeah if OP wants to test their theory, they should try posting a picture of a black man in a thread and watch it derail.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
forgot to mention /fit/. /fit/ has always been pretty good.

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
/vp/ isn't too bad, if you're on topic...

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
/mu/ can have its moments. I mean they're ruthless about music but I haven't seen much bigotry there, even the ironic kind.

Hilariously, /ck/ and /an/ are some of the worst, meanest boards. I was not expecting that.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, /mu/ is pretty good. Whenever people start spewing racist bullshit they get told to go back to /b/, not to mention according to one of the survey threads a while back a huge chunk of the board is both pro choice and pro gay rights. That was pretty sweet.

Imo /cgl/ is one of if the nastiest boards. Euugh.

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
I've never been on /an/ but I think /ck/ has two types of people, people who are ironically super elitist and people who are ironically super trashy, and the two types just get into huge arguments with one another and bitch about nothing at all.

I've had really awesome discussions on /ck/ though, not really lately, but I haven't been lurking as much as I normally do. I find the greentext threads on /ck/ to be the funniest on 4chan but that's just me.

/lit/, perhaps? I don't go there often, but they're been fine in my experience.

Really? I found /cm/ to be really transphobic - it's what made me stop going there.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think /cm/ varies widely from thread to thread, since a lot of people come specifically for a certain canon's threads. Even where there is overlap, it seems like they all just have a different... Tone, I guess?

Like, for example, the SMT threads tend to have a lot of discussion compared to other threads.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, gosh, I love the SMT threads. Makes me wish some of the other threads I lurk have talkers in them.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Now I almost want to test this...

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
/co/ is still good. Not as good, but not bad either.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
active thread in /co/ as we speak:

End of Ultimatum:
Sue: You saved the world Reed, but you didn't bother saving me. Also I want a lot of dicks shoved in me before I settle down with anyone.

There's a lot of misogyny in /co/. It makes how they salivate over MLP kind of creepy.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say it was the best, I said it's not as good as it used to be. You can still have good discussion on it.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
D:

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
See, I don't think that's misogynistic, so much as it is hilarious. YMMV.

If you're pretty laid back and aren't really easily offended (ie you can take -ist jokes in stride) then it's a pretty fun place to chill.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
That was not a joke. The person was sincerely upset about how Sue was now being characterized as a bitchy whore. The rant continued for several paragraphs, and it wasn't even the main point of the rant.

If you can take -isms in stride then yeah, 4chan is great, but you're in for a pretty rude awakening if you think the majority of these people are joking. Because they're not.

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't see the thread so I'll have to take your word on that. I still think the one line on its own is funny though. *shrug* Was the rant about Sue, or was it about problems with Ultimatum? I could believe somebody ranting about either. XP

I don't think there's really any way to prove if they're joking or not, but in my experience, the people I've met there and continued discussion with, and people I've known irl who turned out to frequent the chan, were not racists, misogynists, or homophobes. Based on that I'm inclined to think that like all these dudes I know (I've yet to meet another chick that frequents 4chan) who are channers, most (not all) are doing it for the lulz more than anything else. I'm sure some are as ignorant and backwater as they seem, but I think some do it ironically and some do it in an "i troll u!!!' sort of way, trying to get a rise. But again, YMMV, maybe I've just managed to meet the only 10 cool people on 4chan, haha.

[identity profile] antler-action.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
/y/, really? Last time I was there they were in the middle of some kind of civil war as the population shifted from mostly girls to mostly guys. I guess that must have calmed down.

Yeah, even /c/ and /cm/ were not great with racism. I spent a little while on /a/, but the constant /A/ HELP ME MOLEST MAI IMOUTO threads got to be too much.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
I guess that means the shift in /y/ happened and is over, because when I looked a couple weeks ago it looked to have been largely taken over by dudes.

NGL, I am disappoint.

[identity profile] imouto.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Molest their who-now? D;!

(Anonymous) 2011-04-29 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's unfortunate. o___O

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
/y/ has always had dumbtarded bara-versus-bishie wars, though.
