As other people said, Gothel didn't give a damn about her. She only coveted her hair. If she could have found a way to cut it off with it retaining its powers, she probably would've offed Rapunzel at the first chance.

And why I understand the idea of being free from any sort of adult responsibilities might seem swell, you do realize it was at the expense of being able to do anything else but stay in a tiny tower with only three books and some paints. She wasn't even given canvases, just the walls! I would've gone crazy with boredom after a few weeks, forget about years or the rest of my life.

She'd off her? Did you see the same movie I did? Because it looked like if Gothel could have gotten away with just a piece of hair, she would have left Rapunzel in her bed to sleep because she had the one thing she wanted.

It's more like Gothel would drop Rapunzel like a bad habit if the hair keep it's power after she cut it off.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I did see the same movie you did. -_- She kept Rapunzel for so long because she couldn't just chop off her hair. If she'd figured out a way to do it while she had Rapunzel locked up in that tower, you think she would've just dumped the girl back on her parents' doorstep with a pat on the head? No. She would've chopped the hair off and gotten rid of Rapunzel as quick as you please.

In other words, you're confused over what I wrote. She couldn't have found a way to retain the powers when Rapunzel was a baby, because she didn't even know cutting the hair would negate them. "could have found a way" rather implies later down the road, when she already has her.

I don't think she'd kill her though, more like abandon her.

And risk anyone finding her later? Highly doubtful. She stabbed Flynn/Eugene through because he was a loose end. She'd do the same to Rapunzel.

Not that she'd tell Rapunzel where she was going in the first place, and if Flynn never came along, she'd be stuck in the tower either to starve to death or eventually go outside to get food, maybe without ever calling elsewhere home, without her knowing her origins anyway.

She only stabbed Flynn because he had the ability to leave and could get help.

This comment actually convinced me that she'd kill Rapunzel in this scenario. Leaving her to wander the wilderness and tell people who knows what seems like way too much of a risk. I'm extrapolating on the movie but she seems like someone who would have her fingers in a lot of different pies and a Rapunzel knowing what is likely her deepest secret just isn't something I imagine her being cool with. Maybe she'd cut out her tongue first :)

You're right. She stabbed Flynn because he could get help, ie, tell people who Gothel was. Just like Rapunzel could, and most likely would. We saw in the movie that there was access in and out of the tower with use of Rapunzel's hair. I doubt Gothel would leave Rapunzel there and chance her finding it, especially since Gothel herself would have to leave that way since the hair would be cut at that point. Rapunzel would be a loose end. Look at what Gothel did to both Flynn and the Stabbington brothers. Gothel did not do loose ends.
