So if mother gothel had a tragic backstory that justifies kidnapping and abusing rapunzel?

I recall saying something along the lines of "if the movie turned out differently," but hey, a semi-tragic backstory seemed to justify all sorts of behavior in Beauty and the Beast, and I quite liked that one. And I think one could come up with all sorts of cool backstories for Gothel that don't involve her being a spoiled rich kid...
