Funny you make the comparison to Quasimodo. I was just thinking about this a few days ago. Actually, I think Rapunzel had a better situation than Quasi did. At least Gothel showed her kindness and affection.

Frollo... oh, dear god, the pure disgust and hatred in his eyes were he looks at Quasimodo gives me the chills. Even when he's being "kind" you can see the loathing.

Neither of them had a good situation. But I think Rapunzel was slightly better off.
