I haven't seen Magiranger yet, but you know ... it's not that big a deal. I am largely biased against Goseiger (haven't seen it, totally stole Decade's card schtick so I'm a little bitter, don't know if I want to) but I can pretty much listen to "Gotcha Goseiger" all the time. It's fun. It makes me happy!

Why should anything else matter?

[identity profile] nalanzu.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Decade's actually the third Heisei Rider series to use the cards as ability/power repositories -- Blade (2004) and Ryuki(2002) both did something similar. I can't speak for the earlier series, as I've seen none of them, but I do remember a number of the, ah, older fans complaining about the cards when they showed up in Ryuki and criticizing them as a marketing gimmick. (I know, I know, cool-story-bro, but so many of the Heisei series have been so enjoyable to me that I want to recommend all of them to anyone who enjoyed one of them.)

Also, I gave up on Goseiger eight or nine episodes in, but that one has a cute theme too. :)

[identity profile] nyankee.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I know this. I have not, however, seen Blade and Ryuki was so long ago in relation that I think it's safe to say Super Sentai was trying to ride on the sudden resurgence in Ganbaride's popularity that came with Decade. That's most of what makes me bitter, having loved Decade (I'm prepared to be judged, since most of Kamen Rider fandom hated Decade) and actually having gotten into playing Ganbaride because of it.

And you know, I'm hearing this "didn't get past ten episodes" thing everywhere. I watched the crossover with Shinkenger and didn't feel too compelled to go back and watch it beforehand (mostly I was just there because I missed the shit out of the entire Shinkenger cast), and I don't feel all that drawn to it now, either.

[identity profile] nalanzu.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Super Sentai may indeed have been trying to ride that popularity -- I'm certainly willing to entertain the possibility. :) I am also certainly willing to let you and everyone else like what you like; I didn't much like Decade, either, but I don't see why anyone else shouldn't.

Blade was fantastic, though, and I'd really really like to recommend it. Very well written, mostly pretty well paced, solid characterization, very internally consistent, and the character interaction felt very human. Definitely in my top three.

I will agree with you re: Den-Oh and the fifty million sequels as an argument to equating Toei and marketing gimmick, but I really did enjoy the first four films (particularly on the big screen). It's hard to be upset with Toei for continuing to milk the cash cow when the results are so FUNNY...

[identity profile] nyankee.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, I'm not mad about it. I watch them too, and I generally laugh out loud every time. I just don't think there's any reason to deny that they like money too much to stop milking things for all they're worth (to the point of ridiculousness ... oh, hey, we have a Rider that is specifically designed to cross over through worlds, but let's make the main Rider in the big huge Many Much Riders movie Den-O! Really, guys? Come on). They re-released Battle Royale in 3D (still screaming) purely because they knew they could make money off of it.

I've been told to watch Blade a million times, and I do plan to! Probably this summer. But if I don't get on with it and watch Kabuto soon I have a friend who may just shake me until I cease to function.

[identity profile] nalanzu.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
They'll totally milk Den-Oh as long as possible. Ah, well. I've not seen the ... was it the eighth one that came out this spring? I've been told it's fun.

Kabuto is also a lot of fun and has some creepy moments, although the movie for that one was seriously one of the most WTF (beaten out only by Phi's, or 555 (2003), for the sheer factor of Why Would You Do That - Den-Oh does not count here because the entire sub-franchise is composed ENTIRELY OF CRACK). Sasword (whose character name escapes me at the moment but was played by Yamada Yusuke) amused to no end. Particularly the bit with the natto and the tofu. Damn. I should re-watch that one.

[identity profile] nyankee.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I would probably watch Kabuto no matter how bad it turned out to be, because Kato Kazuki is in it, and I am weak for that man forever and ever.

And Yamamoto Yusuke, who is Tsurugi/Sasword, but I didn't actually know he was in it until someone showed me a clip of him just now thinking that his sword was so shiny and sharp you couldn't see it, and I fell in love all over again.

What can I say. I'm a little shameless.

[identity profile] nalanzu.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Dammit, I wrote Yamada, didn't I. Clearly my brain cells are gone. His character is great, so very ridiculous and over the top and thoroughly likable. The natto and tofu, seriously, just wait for it. It was absolutely my favorite single self-contained moment of the entire series - I laughed SO hard.

Was Kato Kazuki the make-up artist? He's got some great scenes.

I promise, it's not awful. I remember anticipating it every week and then the end being very, um, odd. I think it was odd. I haven't seen it since it broadcast.

[identity profile] nyankee.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Kato Kazuki is the makeup artist who wanders around with jailbait.

/k-kanyeshrug?!

... and then Don Dogoier made a Beakerface (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8BiG5Fm99JQ/Tb4Btp5Xg9I/AAAAAAAAUUs/5gE4j6KJ6JA/s1600/sentai1820.jpg) and I forgot what I was talking about because I laughed so hard. Maybe watching Gokaiger 11 before bed was not my most brilliant idea.

[identity profile] nalanzu.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Aaah, she isn't jailbait in Japan. (Possibly.) We're - or at least I'm - just going to pretend it's not skeevy...

No, no, Gokaiger before sleep is clearly the way to ensure cracked out and fun dreams. Is it up to eleven already? I am so behind. And behind on Os. OOO. Whatever the accepted spelling is. (Kamen Rider Os, stay crunchy in milk!) So much easier to keep track of these things when you can actually watch the broadcast.

PARDON THE RP JOURNAL I AM TOO LAZY TO LOG BACK OUT

[identity profile] moefortono.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
It is! 11 just aired yesterday, so I was watching the raw. OOO is up to 32 and shit is getting real and it is amazing and terrifying.

Except the new Candroid, which is cute beyond words, but then they all are.

You should catch up sometime! How far are you?

Re: PARDON THE RP JOURNAL I AM TOO LAZY TO LOG BACK OUT

[identity profile] nalanzu.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Pardon the delay - had to run. ^^;; I'm up to Gokaiger 7 and Os 24, so pretty far behind.

Hey, if you want to talk sentai/kamen rider some time, my IM handle is the same as my journal handle. :)

[identity profile] nyankee.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Also, "Toei" and "Marketing Gimmick" are interchangeable! See also: Den-O and the Fifty Million Sequels.
