I know how you feel OP. I've got a bunch of serials from the older series that I should start watching, but I'm holding back from grabbing any of them. Because I'm worried they'll be boring and I'll hate them, and then I won't fit in at the comm because everyone else loves Old Who. :(

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, you will probably be pleasantly surprised if you start on audio serials since they were made more recently than the older series and thus have pacing, scripting, acting and production more in line with what you've come to expect from New Who. You won't have to put up with terrible special effects, bottom-of-the-barrel budgets and the occasional incomprehensibly staged scene that goes hand in hand with these things!

I know what you mean. i want to see them all, I can just never get around to it...

goddamnit dude, but where is my epic Giles mpreg?

We can learn together, anon! I'm listening to 8's dramas and watching 1. I've been watching 1 for the past year, one episode whenever I feel like it. Don't let it feel like a chore!

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I can imagine.. Ive been into DW to varying degrees since the 80's, and even I find it all too much sometimes. I can't even imagine what it's like for new fans... O_O

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I felt that way when I was watching the fourth Doctor. And now I feel that way about the New Who because I've only really watched a couple of them...

Just remember that most of those older serials weren't actually meant to be watched all in a row. The episodes were spaced out for the original audience and you can space them out too.

[identity profile] lunarkitten.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I JUST started watching Who with my boyfriend beginning with series six. If I end up liking it as much as I think I will, I'd want to at least try the older stuff... but I feel intimidated because there's just so much of it. I know how you feel, OP.

Well don't let it intimidate the fun out of it.

I started watching with the new series and just loved it instantly. I can't say I have any desire to go back and catch up with decades worth of television.

[identity profile] ninjafelidae.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm finding the old episodes very enjoyable, but I haven't seen any of the recent seasons so I'm unable to compare. I can see how such a mountain of material might be intimidating, but it's kinda cool to know that I have decades' worth of adventures ahead of me.

Don't put yourself through it unless you really want to. It's a lot of time to invest. But hey, you get a dancing Chesterton for effort!

Eight's audios are a great place to start. In a lot of ways, they're written like the new series, with season arcs, strong character development, etc, so it's not too much of a culture shock. The companions are fab too, and McGann's voice is GREAT for audio, it's so compelling.

As for telly, I agree, just watch bits. Don't start with the Talons of Weng Chiang, I did, and I HATED it, it was slow, murky, racist. Maybe now I'd "get" it more, but I didn't then and it put me off for a while.

The unknown is always going to seem intimidating, but it's really not that bad, and you don't have to watch everything. Good luck! If you don't enjoy them after a while, don't persist, it's just not for you!

+1

I loved Eight's stories with Romana and Weng Chiang is ghastly. If OP is finding it difficult to get into, I'd suggest to start with Three or Four, as they have some of the most slick episodes - they're also in colour and they don't drag on for as many parts as some of the earlier ones (though I'd suggest the Mind Robber and Tomb of the Cybermen). City of Death is impossible not to love.

All these episodes can be found on youtube now anyway, so you don't have to go back and buy all the videos/DVDs.

Just a thought, but Six's audio dramas are really good ones to start with. That is, I knew nothing about Six except that he was the Doctor and he was very grumpy, and I still followed fine. It helped, maybe, to go with the ones that didn't feature companions from the show.

Six with Iris Wildethyme is pretty wicked.

Six traveling with Dr. Evelyn Smith is pure gold, and my absolute favorite Team Tardis ever.

I really reccommend the Eighth Doctor BBC books; I absolutley love them.

They have one of two favourite companions, Fitz.

FITZ!!

The world needs more Fitz!

I have a long commute, and it goes SO MUCH FASTER with the Eight audios in my life. I adore the Eight/Lucie Miller series. She's just about my favorite companion.

I've actually found the audios to be really accessible to a new fan (I jumped on the 2005 bandwagon myself). Go for it!

(Anonymous) 2011-05-04 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Brave heart, anon. I was intimidated by the volume of material too, but I found that I got into it and I wound up liking it better than NuWho. Just take it slowly and don't feel you have to absorb it all at once, or watch/listen to serials/Doctors you don't like. There's a lot of it and it's pretty uneven. Some of it is great and some of it is crap, so you can pick and choose.

[identity profile] aralias.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
i'd say old who is intimidating, yes, and a little bit boring in lots of places, but the audios as other people have said are written for a modern audience AND eight's audios in particular are not dependent on having watched that old who. he's been plucked from the tv movie and that's about it - nothing else goes with him, and then you're in pretty much the same situation as you are with new who when a classic monster comes back.

but even the other doctors there isn't too much to tie them to their tv stories, you should be fine. particularly if you choose to follow a companion who hasn't had a tv life (thus again, eight is perfect as none of his have, but six and evelyn is a good place to go as well).

hope you enjoy the audios - though obviously it may be a bit late, and you're well into them by now, but i've enjoyed them a lot and i started listening to them well before i'd watched most of most doctors.

[identity profile] kelincihutan.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Six/Charley is probably my third favorite Team TARDIS...although those might make more sense if you listen to the Eight/Charley ones first. And "Zagreus" and "Scherzo" scared me half to death...

Anyway, the point of this ramble is, don't be intimidated. It's only fandom. You're supposed to enjoy it, and if you don't, it's no real loss.
