That's what is known as "hipster homophobia".

And I hate to say it, but yeah, that kind of DOES make your friend a homophobe. Homophobia != active malice. :\

(Anonymous) 2011-05-04 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
Known as "hipster anything" by douchebags.

It's just

such douchebaggy terms

(Anonymous) 2011-05-04 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It depends...is it the characters who say this? Or is it written in the author's perspective?

Because characters' opinions =/= author's opinions.

THIS! You beat me to it...

+1

I can't say for sure, since I don't think the fandom is specified, but if the characters are canonically homophobic, it would make sense for that sort of language to be in the fic. But I don't know if OP means the author is projecting their own homophobia onto the characters, or what :|a

[identity profile] radio-nurse.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
This, basically.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-05-07 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry for late reply, but it's very much the author's perspective. The characters often hardly ever use language in canon-- and author has them bursting out in homophobic slurs every sentence, to be funny, I guess.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well, how are they using those terms, though? Are putting it into the mouths of bad guys/antagonists? Because I can so how you'd do that, s a writer. I mean, my bad guys definitely do things I'd find reprehensible...that's sort of the point.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-05-08 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's the author just using it in the narrative summary in order to be ironic, as said. Sorry for the late reply!

Re: OP

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ah,yes, I can see how that could go either way, turn unfunny, and just end up being offensive...

[identity profile] dinerstate.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
That lion cub is ADORABLE.

Also I have nothing constructive to add, as you can tell.

That lion cub is ADORABLE.

Yes, yes it is.

[identity profile] ladyorihime.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
Was I the only one thinking of a certain Lion and lion kub from a certain animated Disney movie after seeing that picture? XD

off topic

(Anonymous) 2011-05-04 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
that photo is the background of my computer.
I love it so much, omg.

Sometimes I think it depends on the person as to whether or not they're sexist/homophobic/etc. It could juse be pure ignorance over the true meaning of a word (everyone knows what "faggot" means, but I don't think a lot of people truly realize how offensive it can be). I suppose this belief comes from my own childhood. I was always told that if I had to swear, at least use words like "bitch" and "shit" instead of words like "fuck" or "cunt".

It wasn't until years later on livejournal that I learned "bitch" really isn't the equivalent of "crap". If I had never gotten an account here, who knows how long I would have thought "bitch" was an ok, harmless swear word to use. The sad thing is, very few people are actually taught this sort of thing. Not unless their parents or friends are really up on social issues.

That's part of the reson I don't consider Dean's (from Supernatural) use of the word "bitch" all that sexist. Because he isn't saying it out of hatred for women or because he believes he/men is superior to women. He likely doesn't even know the true implications of the word, because he's never been educated about it. And let's face it, "bitch" is one of the most commonly used swears out there. I genuinely believe it's because most people think it's one of the lesser swears. Not because people know it's social/sexist implications and use it because of that.

[identity profile] sky-queen3.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
In what way are they using the terms?

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I think we need a little more info on how they are used in the fic...if it's an IC line, I wouldn't get so mad at your friend. Either way it's okay for you to bring it up but...don't be surprised if they don't stop using it in fic especially when their other friends seem to support it.

[identity profile] momentsplinter.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
You're not being oversensitive. If your friend is saying homophobic things just to be ~ironic, they're still homophobic.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
If they're writing a fanfic in which a character says them--and it's IC for that character to use language like that--then not necessarily.

I don't like swearing. But if I'm writing Scout, I really can't just have him say "gosh darn it!" when he gets shot. Depending on the background of the character, it may make sense for them to say all manner of unsavory thing. It's not being "ironic" (because yeah, if "irony" is their excuse, they're just jerks). Just writing believable characters.

[identity profile] momentsplinter.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah, that could be true, but it does say in the secret that OP thinks their friend is doing it to be ironic, and I'm willing to believe them. And honestly, as a queer person, it really bugs me that every time there's a secret like this, the comments always focus on the possibility that what was said might not have really been homophobic rather than actually condemning the homophobia.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, kinda this. :/ I mean, I definitely believe in separating characters' views from authors' views when reasonable, and I don't believe that offensive language or ideas are off-limits in fiction. But sometimes it seems like the possibility that the person is homophobic is the last thing people are willing to consider.

[identity profile] nikki4noo.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
There was a recent fic in a fandom I am in that warned for the use of LGBTQ language and culture. They then added that if faggot was a trigger, it was used but apparently not as a derogatory term. The implication was that it was an "acceptable" term and I know some LGBTQ friends who disagree strongly with that idea. Needless to say I didn't read the fic just purely from that warning.

Oh my lord people need to get a new hobby.
