Or ramped up into domestic abusers to make someone's rival ship look more "valid" or to justify someone's hate for them :/

Oh, lordy, do not get me started on how France's relationship with England in portrayed in that regard. And, sadly, I've even seen the opposite, where America is so blithely idiotic and obnoxious that England must run into France's arms.
