[Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, Loom]

You're not alone, I've been playing Grim Fandango-Loom-The Manhole-Secret of Monkey Island for the past year... I can't say I'm much into Loom, but I'm intrigued by the concept of "crazy fanfic ideas" for the game. Care to expand, OP? :)

And WHAT, no Lucasarts fandom? That's unexpected.

OP

Not so many crazy fanfic ideas for Loom itself, I'm afraid. xD For some reason, the game being left so open-ended without a sequel just left me disappointed and uncreative. It's more Bobbin himself that I fell in love with. xD
The biggest of my crazy fanfic ideas was the one encompassing all of the LucasArts adventures, based on a throwaway gag near the end of Curse of Monkey Island. Basically, all the main characters of the games exist in real life like the Toons in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Bobbin and Guybrush are best friends and get up to all sorts of mischief together!

There is a sort-of fandom... most Monkey Island fans hang out in the Telltale Games forums, and general LucasArts fans can be found in the MixNMojo forums, but they don't tend to be very creative. Most of the time, MixNMojo discusses news, and the TMI forums on TTG are pretty quiet nowadays. :(

That's really unexpected for me... what with Lucasarts games being much loved and having strong characters that people still remember. Most gamers don't even know that the fandom I hang out in had characters at all! Yet the community's alive and kicking. Well, sorta. But it's creative, close-knit and well-organized. What a pity! I was really hoping to find some Lucasarts-centric corner of the internet to lurk once I'm done with the games =/

Bobbin and Guybrush can be BFFs all they want, I'd definitely read their interaction. Thanks for the headcanon, at least :3 And I know what you mean with Loom, it feels like it's either staring at the game with a blank expression or setting out to write the sequels in fanfic form, doesn't it? I wouldn't mind a snarky piece or two with Loom's lovely dragon, though, or more crazy backgrounds for the drafts (best instruction manual ever, and that's including Katamari Damacy 2's)...

[identity profile] mizzuks.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I love Monkey Island so much. Shame there isn't a whole lot of fandom for it.
I haven't played the other two and didn't get all that far in Loom, so I can't really say much else.

Monkey Island ROCKS, doesn't it? 8D

[identity profile] baaing-tree.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
MONKEY ISLAND HELLZ YEAH!

And I wish I had known about Grim Fandango back when it originally came out. I want to play it so bad, but it's hard to find... T_T

[identity profile] zimyunicornfoal.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I really want to play that too, but

[identity profile] zimyunicornfoal.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
but I hit the wrong button and posted before i finished typing. xD

But have also never been able to find it. xD

[identity profile] saltintheoven.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I had such a crush on Bobbin. I think I even drew some crap fanart, and I know I messed around with some random headcanon at the time, although none of it ever evolved into proper fanfiction. I still wish I'd been able to play the updated version of the game with spoken dialogue and slightly fancier graphics.

Never got to play Zak McKracken, although I tried pretty hard (and failed) to get my hands on it at one point.

I ADORE Bobbin. :3 It's weird, considering my favourite contributer on TGWTG is Todd in the Shadows and he's best known for always wearing a hoodie and hiding his face. xD
I want to play Loom with the dialogue, too. My (pirated, nothing available to buy at the time) download stuffed up the files for the voices and music and was completely silent.

Zak is a pretty good game, if you are careful about never letting Zak and Annie run out of money and not letting Melissa and Leslie run out of oxygen. What I loved most was the rather ridiculous and cheesy plot, especially the very end. And it gave me all sorts of crazy fanfic ideas that kept me amused for months. xD
I found the rare FM-Towns version in a torrent somewhere years ago. I don't know where you'd be able to find it now. :(

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
That version's on Steam (possibly also GoG?) for cheap! The dub is hilarious! :)

I liked Loom a lot. There are not so many games that actively involve music.

[identity profile] immaculate.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, classic games...
I totally feel your pain, but while I love the old Lucas Arts stuff, I am obsessed with Westwood Studios and really old school EA. Oh and Sierra. Oh okay everything. You got me.

Where are the fandoms? D: D: D:

[identity profile] katflace.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh hey, Zak! I first played that when I was four years old. On an Amiga 2000. Lots of nostalgia. It's not a fandom I've ever actively done anything in, but I'm still very fond of it. I actually just played it the other day because I couldn't remember the precise response to "pick up Mt. Rainier"...

I still love all LucasFilm Games/LucasArts adventures, really. Except Loom, Full Throttle and The Dig, because for some reason I never got around to playing them. And Escape from Monkey Island, because... meh. The first three had just the right balance of a halfway serious plot and crazy shit, but feels like by the fourth, the jokes have totally taken over. And it just doesn't work. :|

(Also, hey, it's the 256 colour FMTowns version. How many people even know that exists?)

[identity profile] katflace.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
(Also, I've kind of wanted a Zak McKracken/Stargate crossover for a long time. The Skolarian artifacts are actually Ancient technology and require the ATA gene to use Y/N? It'd require a bit of rewriting and handwaving, but whatever, I think it could be fun.)

OP

I once found a torrent of all the LucasArts adventure games and played them through in order from Maniac Mansion to Escape from Monkey Island... only skipping Grim Fandango because I couldn't get it to work. And I think I may have skipped the Monkey Islands too, simply because I'd already played them all many times. xD Loom is pretty simple to play, though you have to note down all the songs because they're randomly generated, and like Zak there are sometimes multiple solutions to the same puzzle. Full Throttle is often criticised for being short, but it's fun and it also has my favourite gag of all time: the exploding robo-bunny march. xD The Dig is interesting mainly because of its long production history, but I suppose its also interesting to see another theory on alien life, too. :)
You probably know you're not the only one to be disappointed in EfMI; It's not the black sheep of the series for nothing. xD

(The FMTowns version happened to be the one in the torrent I got! I didn't even realise it was a rare version until I was reading the articles on ATMachine's site http://home.comcast.net/~ervind/ and that makes it even more interesting :3)
