wow, you must be really conflicted after yesterday's election results.

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's the British word for our Conservative party.

(I say our Conservative party because the American parties are actually far righter than the Conservatives - even the Democrats - as we tend to be more to the left on terms of economics, law, sexuality and immigration issues.)

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's a British term? Colour me surprised. I thought it was just a Canadian thing. Speaking of Tories, they just won the election, yeah, just Canada, no1curr. Stephen Harper got elected AGAINNNNN bleargh

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
I believe you might have inherited it from us - as in ye old pre-invading-everything days, the English Parliament consisted of Tories and Whigs as our two parties.

We have a coalition between Liberal Democrats and Tories. It... it isn't really going well to be honest ^.^;

UNDERSTATEMENT

THEY'RE BOTH DICKHEADS WHO CAN'T RUN A CORNERSHOP LET ALONE A COUNTRY

...:|

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you might say that. I couldn't possibly comment. I know an awful lot of people who are doing better off underneath this government.

I'm not saying your viewpoint is invalid, just that it's just that - a viewpoint :)

[identity profile] anthropomorphe.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
like rich people who can afford private doctors etc. and don't have to rely on public services like the NHS

and rich people who get to pay less towards taxation because poor people are paying more

aaaaand rich people who can afford to pay their children to go to good universities so they can get good jobs and stay rich

i'm sort of seeing a pattern here but idk

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Um. Yes, but Conservatives are traditionally good for businesses and the middle classes, so, it's not just the rich who are supported by them. And, um, the Labour Party actually introduced payment for university, so it's not as if that's specifically a Conservative thing - more a politics thing in general :)

[identity profile] anthropomorphe.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
EVERY TIME I SEE THAT ICON I WANT TO CRY HOLY FUCK

And lol. I may be more right wing than left wing, but my mom's ~*uber!liberalism*~ sometimes shines through, s-so. Sorry if I jumped or anything?!

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops! Sorry, I rather like spiders :P

No problem! I just like everything to be as neutral as poss. Damn BBC genes.

[identity profile] anthropomorphe.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay? I have weird phobias of everything insect and arachnid related, l-lol.

Haha, I'm sort of like, /OPINIONS OPINIONS like a naval broadside. Or something. :|

[identity profile] anthropomorphe.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't he better than... Ignatieff, or whatever? Didn't he bring Liberal votes to a historical low.

...My best friend is Canadian, so my info is second-hand, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-07 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's their real, true name, but they've tried to rebrand as 'the Conservative Party' because they think it sounds less stuff and more formal. And, after all, 'Tory' and 'Whig' were both insulting terms used by opponents when the party system was just starting to form... You'd think they'd like the link to the past, and the continuity that makes them much older than the other parties (unless you play games with the Liberal Demcrat lineage, although I suppose it's not so very different from saying we are the same country as the United Kingdom of Great Britain), given their emphasis on Traditional British Values.

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree - it isn't actually their real true name as the ancestral party - The Tory Party (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tory_%28British_political_party%29) - split in 1846 into the 'Peelites' (which then joined with the Whigs and Radicals to form the Liberal party (which was later joined by the SDP to form the current Liberal Democrats)) and the 'Conservatives'.

By ancestry alone, the Liberal Democrats could be considered the 'Tory party'. Indeed, the modern Conservatives were first led by an ex-Radical and an ex-Whig.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-07 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
the wanker's party uses the word "tory" on their own flyers. Still, I suppose the rest is all fucking lies, its nno surprise they lie about the name of the party too.

The lib dems are tories as well though (now), and were rewarded as such in Scotland on thursday.

[identity profile] indevoutly.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Your comments don't sound very non-partisan, anon. :D

If you support that view then that's fine, but it's not mine!

[identity profile] manatees.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ummm not all the Lib Dems are Tories? The leadership maybe (and I certainly wouldn't call say, Chris Huhne a Tory) but definitely not the party membership at large. Most of them hate Clegg now. Charles Kennedy and Shirley Williams are definitely not Tories.

Come back when you've learnt some political history, please.

/saying this as a Labour party member, whose party suffered WAY more in Scotland on Thursday

[identity profile] pet-lunatic.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded; I'm emphatically not a Tory, and I was a Lib Dem until I ditched them in protest over the current leadership - I voted for Huhne as leader, refuse to accept responsibility for Clegg! ;)

(Anonymous) 2011-05-07 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
lol Scotland. Still am not over that result.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-07 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
an evil bastard that deserves shot, repeatedly. In the face.
