I always see stuff about rumors regarding that, but never any official statement from Lennon himself. I'm failing as a Beatles nerd here, but were there any official responses to this from John?

Mn, it's a complicated story, because Lennon and Epstein themselves, as far as I know, both gave various versions of this, depending on whom they talked to. John did say something had happened to Pete Shotton, but he told Yoko that he just 'respected' Brian a lot, as a person. While it might not be cool to tell your wife you like men as well, when said wife is Yoko Ono, I think you can pretty much be unafraid of shocking her, though.

So... I don't know, really. Complicated story, I suppose, but I don't see why a straight bloke would go in vacation with a gay friend of his, just the two of them, for ten days, if he didn't mean something by it. I mean... if he didn't it would have been fucking awkward, right?

otherwise... I pretty much agree. Lennon does seem to be more of the bisexual or bi-curious type than straight, to me. I think I'm past being ashamed of focusing on such trivia though, lol. You're interested in whatever you're interested in, OP. Well all are.

Then again, Lennon was always the strange type. He was cheeky and liked to push the limits of social norms. I'd say maybe he just saw him as a friend (but I wonder if my own sexuality and thinking it's normal to hang out with my straight males friends for trips and stuff might come off as a little biased).

agreed, Lennon was very difficult to understand I think, as a person, and did odd, seemingly illogical things pretty often. I guess we'll never know, unless someone reliable spills the beans about it, eh.

yeah, agreed, he wouldn't be a pointlessly annoying/racist/stupid/whatever troll, he'd his usual weird, witty deadpan self. And it would be awesome. And well, if it's bad, then we can be bad together ^^

I read somewhere that someone said he used to flirt with anyone, guys or girls, at parties, because he liked attention and playing little games like that, but it wasn't usually serious, just for fun. He also said that he had "almost a love affair" with Brian, but that "it was never consummated" (I forget where I read this stuff -.-) when they went on vacation together once. Like, they got very close emotionally, but never had sex, I guess. Anyway it was pretty common knowledge that Brian had a crush on John, so I wouldn't put it past him to try something with the guy just to see what it was like, but I don't think he'd necessarily have been so open about it if they actually had been physical.

yeah, I read that too. Last book about John, Philip Norman's, says basically that. I agree that he did like to play games with people, pretty obvious. But how far was he willing to push the power play, that's the question.

...I do not understand this logic. I've spent extended periods with people whose sexual orientations would include me but I'm not into.

I mean, jesus, imagine if someone was bi. They wouldn't be allowed to be alone with ANYBODY.

But first of all, this was 1963 or thereabouts, when a straight man spending time with a gay man would've been a much bigger deal than it is now. Second, the trip they went on wasn't really a "just friends" kind of trip, but a quiet holiday for two, more the sort of thing a couple would do. So John agreed to go off for a ten-day tete a tete with a man he knew was (a) gay and (b) in love with John. If John didn't at least try to reciprocate Brian's interest, he was a shit for agreeing to go.

Pretty much what anon said. I didn't mean that a gay bloke can't hang out with a straight bloke, of course! Some straight blokes have best mates who are gay, and they have a great time together, that's not the question.

Point is that, if you knew someone had a huge crush on you, straight or gay doesn't matter, would you go with this person on a ten days holiday, alone? That sounds a little... awkward if you don't share the feeling at all.
