It's the "objectively" that bugs me. If you like one better than the other, that's fine. But to say that it's just a better put-together show is ridiculous. Castle is just a genre cop show with a "twist" (because these days, our genre cop shows need twists because we've seen the regular kind too much). Don't get me wrong, it's fun and funny.

Firefly is incomparable not because it's a sci-fi or a Western, but because it's not a formulaic show. Every episode of Castle, more or less, will follow a broad formula. Firefly was a different thing every time you watched it. With more originality, creative world design, and delicious music.

Oy.

Er. As a major sci-fi geek - Firefly was deeply formulaic, it just followed a different formula and over a longer spectrum. And the world design also follows many traditional sci-fi conventions (some of them almost creepily close, as in to-the-point-of-it's-a-good-thing-it's-a-cliche-or-else-we've-have-a-plagiarism-suit-on-our-hands; especially but not limited to character design). It's really how you look at it: i.e. a subjective judgement.

At any rate, it is always possible to make an objective criterion - based on technological skill (use of cameras, creativity of shots, etc), creativity of dialogue, acting talent, the amount of movie tricks used and how well they were used, etc. Which (while I agree with you that the original secret probably didn't mean it that way) means that it's perfectly plausible to say that one is "objectively" better than another regardless of the formula it follows.

My mistake. By formulaic, though, I mean each episode follows the same format. Shows like Castle, Monk, Psych, SVU, House...they follow more or less the same format episode to episode. It's not really a negative, because sometimes that's what you're in the mood for. But I don't think you can say Firefly did that. It's really something that works best for the mystery genre or maybe children's programming. Sci-fi shows don't tend to be the same thing episode after episode (or if they are, it's on a much broader scale).
