Mainstream in Japan.

Still an oxymoron for the most part. Most Japanese people don't watch anime. Unless it's a big deal shonen title or one of the handful of "family" anime titles like Doraemon, it's unusual to watch anime, especially after a certain age. Of course, most of Japan reads manga. That's totally different, for some reason. Madoka is not mainstream. It's very much an otaku show, even in Japan.

I would argue if there's mainstream cartoons in America, there's mainstream animes in Japan, even if they're intended for children.

But I would assume, if anything, Sailor Moon would qualify for that, and there was a very lovely lesbian couple in that series, sooooo not really feeling to first commenter's point anyway.

There are some mainstream anime, yes, but most of what people here would be watching (with a few exceptions) is far from mainstream in Japan. Madoka is definitely not mainstream anywhere, including in Japan.
