Is lynching really the word you want? :-/

Is there something wrong with that word choice? Last I checked, it just means a mob killing a person - an exaggeration for events that take place over the Internet, sure, but I insulted Firefly. Geeeenerally that leads to large groups of people telling me that I'm wronger than wrong.

It's sort of a trivializing word choice, is all. (Article on it here. (http://resistracism.wordpress.com/2010/09/24/the-privilege-of-words/)) Not the end of the world or anything, just pointing it out.

And, eh; "Firefly" is not the awesomest thing in the world that people should feel bad for not liking. (It's hardly like disliking...I dunno, cute animals? What's something everyone likes?) "Firefly" can be really sort of skeevy sometimes, to be honest. And I say that as someone who likes it.

Honestly? I had no idea that the word has any ties to racism - I mostly just think of people hunting down witches when I hear the word lynch. Either way, I was exaggerating cuz that's part of my sense of humour, not that that ever translates well on the internet. Or in real life.

I mostly spend my time in sci-fi nerd circles and I am, without fail, the only person in every group that doesn't like Firefly. Apparently some people find that an affront to nature. I don't really get that aspect of fandom - I couldn't care less if people don't like, say, Sanctuary.

Seconded all the way on the Firefly; I have seen so many better, more developed worlds that when I finally did see Firefly I was deeply unimpressed, but try and tell anyone else that and they go crazy about how I'm "missing the point" and how amazing it is. I don't understand it.

And (please let this not start trouble, sigh) while you should know what the word 'lynched' means historically just because people should, it has also entered common usage in the sense you were using it, so I think your usage of it was fine - words just do that, they move from privileged to common usage (i.e. no one ever stops to think about what they're saying when they say they've been "gypped" - and English really doesn't have another word that appropriate conveys the "I've made a bargain in which I've been cheated either by paying too high a price or recieving a badly made item and I feel like an idiot about this" meaning, so the word remains)
