Doctor Who monsters called the Silence (or possibly the Silents, no one seems to be sure on if an individual is called a Silent or a Silence either...) and the basic idea behind them is that [spoilers for episode one and two or series 6] they've been on earth since the beginning and have been manipulating us for their own purposes. You forget about them the moment you look away, but if they've told you to do something then you remember it in the back of your mind and do it without knowing why.
Now that makes all those times you've walked into a room and can't remember why a whole lot more creepy!
Lots of people find the concept more scary than their appearance (which, according to Steven Moffat, the show runner, is where humanity came up with things like The Scream and area 51 aliens!).
