By "the rest" do you mean 50 years or 5?

I think when you look at who over all it fit much better than the RTD years.

(Not that it's perfect.)

This.

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
It definitely doesn't fit in with the style of the reboot. A lot of people say it feels a lot like Old Who though.

[identity profile] chibisaturn.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree with this. If nothing else, the Doctor reminds me so much more of the other Doctors. This has never bothered me, though. None was post war, of course he was a bit different.

[identity profile] wldcatsprstr-14.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I guess a lot of people just want him to be more in line with the post-Time War incarnations. Like, he's been through probably the most traumatic event of his life, the destruction of Gallifrey, (that he was the cause of!) so he's bound to be a lot different from the pre-War Doctors. And it's a reboot, a "new spin" on the Doctor that's branched out from Classic Who so it's just tweaking people that Eleven doesn't fit the reboot "style" of the Doctor.

IDK know though. That's just my guess. I haven't scene enough of Old Who to really judge for sure.

[identity profile] chibisaturn.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I really need to start proofreading better. I meant to say that Nine was post war. Anyway, I can see that but as Ten near the end was getting to where I wanted to kill him myself, Eleven's a breath of fresh air that also happens to harken back to the early stuff, and is therefore enjoyable for that reason as well. Also, it could be argued that Eleven is further along in the healing.

I haven't seen as much of Old Who as some, I'm just the kind of person who, when someone told me to go watch Doctor Who, I went and found The Unearthly Child and worked forward from there, Netflixing what there was to find until I started to get impatient about getting caught up.

[identity profile] trekkiesara.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I do feel like I'm watching a whole different show. The Doctor is so manic, I just want to tie him down for 5 minutes! (and cut his hair, but that's a whole different complaint.) The only Doctors I've really spent time with are 4, 9, 10, and 11 (little bits of 2 and 6 also) and I really am having a hard time figuring out why he's having such a hard time concentrating on one thing. Why is he taking so long to try to figure out why the Tardis exploded? Or what the hell is going on with Amy's uterus? I feel like his ignoring/pushing these things to the side is really hindering my ability to believe he's really the Doctor.

[identity profile] biodamper.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Omg, yes. These are my exact thoughts.

Why does the Doctor not care about all these things? The storytelling seems kind of disjointed, like they can choose to get back to the main storyline whenever they feel like it. This happened with the ending of "the big bang" and "day of the moon". The lack of a real resolution left me hanging.

[identity profile] ditdatdo.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
It feels more like Classic Who to me. And that's very much a good thing.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I preferred the plot arcs of RTD's era (a Bad Wolf here, a mention of a missing planet there, all leading up to the series finale) to the "Oh, look, another time crack. Like every other episode." that we saw in series 5.

Also, I hope they explain Amy's Schrodinger's Fetus before the season finale. If the TARDIS scan becomes a regular end of story ~note of tension~ then I'm going to be annoyed. (Yes, I know it's too early to really tell.)

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
That's precisely why I do enjoy it. RTD's run had its own distinct feel, and while I appreciated it, I'm glad to see it gone and am so very much digging this new stretch.

Plus I feel like I can finally maybe get my brother to watch it because he was so very turned off by the first season of New 'Who.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Moffat is reaally starting to turn me off from the series. This coming from a die-hard fan who watched Old!Who in her childhood :/

He's just so... in your face, and the plots seem to be wrapped up in pointing out to you how clever they are. Like "LOOK LOOK, HERE'S A CLUE, RIGHT HERE, THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT LATER" It's obnoxious really, I was not impressed with the two-part opener at all.

I much more preferred the subtlety of Bad Wolf, where it built and built so much you didn't see until the end of the 1st season, and realised it had been there all along.

I think it kind of shows in how the ratings have been falling...

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
So. Much. This.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, this! The thing is, I like some of the overall stories, and I like the characters, but I feel like Moffat is there on the screen with a pointer all the time, telling me what I'm supposed to be picking up on. It gets wearing.

Erm, I actually find that it fits into the canon of the older stuff a great deal better? I found RTD's Who a lot more disconnected from oldskool/NA/BFA canons.

But I'm one of those strange people who didn't love Nine and Ten, so.

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes and yes

(Anonymous) 2011-05-10 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like it fits into classic canon a lot better than RTD's era. People keep saying Moffat's Who is different, but in the whole history of the show, it really feels like RTD's era is more 'different' from the rest.

That's my main complaint. I mean, I love it, but I really wish that references would be made to the previous seasons. It feels like all of the people that were important to the Doctor then suddenly don't exist now; and I don't even just mean the people he can't see. I miss more companions and their silly endearing families and all that stuff.

[identity profile] starsimpulse.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
i completely agree. i definitely love it the most but it feels like i'm watching a completely different show, tbh. i started watching with eleven but as i'm watching the rest of new!who i can definitely understand why people who loved rtd's era are having a hard time adjusting to this one, or don't like it at all. i mean they literally feel nothing a like. idk, i haven't yet ventured into classic!who yet, so this is really quite uninformed.

[identity profile] tee-sama.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
That's how I felt about RTD's run, really.

To me Moffat's run feels more like old Who and I like that.

[identity profile] niamy-tak.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I feel like both have a distinctive feel, but I do wish there'd be some more references to the Doctor's past. I thought RTD's storytelling was subtler too, though he did do some bad episodes too.

Newbie question time!

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-05-10 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Old!Who seems to be treated as a single entity, but showrunners have changed in the past, right? Were the changes as significant as in the RTD/Moff transition?
