Who is this "everyone"? I think it really depends on who you talk to -- most of my flist LOVES River (as do I). Like most Doctor Who companions, she has people who adore her, and people who hate her. Comes with the territory.

^ This. She's got a huge love fandom and a large hate fandom, just like Donna/Martha/Amy/Rose. I was told the Classic companions had these problem as well. Fandom opinion does seem to be less heavy against guys, like Jack or Rory. But if Mickey counts I know he's got a bit of a fandom love/hate as well.
