... wait, Feferi had characterization?

Yeah yeah funny joke. But in all seriousness, I'd say this sort of writing is a result of paper-thin characterization in canon, mixed with good old-fashioned fan sexism.

Feferi and Sollux are both really thinly characterized as hell compared to the other trolls (and Feferi, especially, has had shit-all screen time). Sollux, however, is a boy and that makes him attractive enough to the fanbase that he can be a blank slate for its collective desires. Meanwhile no one gives enough of a crap about Feferi to write her as anything besides Sollux's girlfriend. (Besides the slash contingent, which just pretends she doesn't exist.)

Shit sucks I guess? In all honesty I find Fef really boring myself ¯\(º_o)/¯

idk even though Feferi wasn't shown that much, the situation she was in, and how she responded to it showed a lot about her character imo. She was assertive enough to reject Eridan and was pretty confident about it, without falling a victim mindset or cruelty. In my opinion that shows she has a strong personality, a good sense of self. Combined with the cute glimpses we get of her that results in what has the potential to be a pretty awesome character.

Maybe I identified too much with it, though, because when I read that I had my own Eridan on my tail and watching her jump of victory after it was over gave me courage to just get it over with .___.

Well yeah, I agree that that was a pretty strong character-defining moment for Feferi.

It was also pretty much her only character-defining moment. As opposed to pretty much everyone else's several moments - e.g. Karkat bawling when Sollux got fakeout killed and later when Kanaya died; all of what Vriska did to Tavros culminating in his murder; all of what Tavros got done to him by Vriska culminating in his murder; even gag-character Equius looking like he was getting up some guts to stand up for his friends only to succumb to his bullshit bigoted ideals and die for them. Pretty much the only character who hasn't had such a moment is, coincidentally, Sollux.

And the one event that could have given her another moment to shine ended with her getting fridged killed, so...

Maybe it's just a consequence of her being introduced so late. I dunno.

Kind of agree? I do find Fef/Sol pretty boring in and out of canon, and Feferidan's only interesting to me if they stay as moirails. But I also have a hard time of running into fanfic with Feferi as a main character, so I'm not too bothered if most of what little there is involves shipping.

Would definitely like to see more of her being adorable and creepy at the same time though. I really liked here pesterlogs with Jade too, so I think I agree about finding her more awesome when she isn't being used as what's essentially "the girlfriend."

Hmm. The fic I'm working on currently (on hold for exams, but nonetheless) involves Feferi as a major character without much Sollux. Although it is an AU.

I've never really noticed her being portrayed that way in the fics I've read, but then, I haven't seen very much fic including her at all. It might be partly down to the fact that, from about the time they got together on, she really was inseparable from him. Although she did talk about things besides him, at least.

I was really hoping we'd get to see some of the "rebel empress" Feferi was vaguely described as, what with her controversial views on culling and so on. I was very sad when post-game she just wanted to TALK ABOUT FEELINGS.

Oh dear. I've drawn a bit of Sollux/Feferi, they're one of my two top OTPs. They're just cute together; he saved her life, she's infatuated with him as she gets to start over, he's influenced enough to use her puns... adorable. If she's always portrayed as glubbing about him, it's because she's newly smitten so he'll be the main thing on her mind for awhile? I find it cute, and happy that she gets to be happy after being shouldered with so much responsibility all her life.

I love Feferi on her own, I think she had potential enough to be a good character and a bridge to the outer ring/horrorterrors. Sadly, we'll probably never see this. In my own fanon, after she and Sollux fill their buckets calm down a little, she'll get back on her own stuff. Keeping Eridan at bay.

I figured she was shown in pictures with him all the time because...she was always with him in canon. I mean, don't get me wrong, she's not nearly a leech in canon as she is in some fanworks, but she was still, 9 times out of 10 after that pairing was established, ALWAYS WITH HIM when they'd appear on the scene.

It would've been nice to see more of her personality than just "LOL FISH PUNS!" and pulling that prank on Vriska. But, then again, that's just the character Hussie likes to write-- pranksters. And he's sacrificed characterization for more jokes lately. It's no surprise that Feferi wouldn't be any different, especially since she was always a silly character meant to be dopey and adorable.
