ia, those fandoms are so chill.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, one of those is my happy place. \o/

I almost get the feeling that a lot of wanky types are put off by canon that can be "uncomfortable" to watch.

I need to watch these.

I KNOW, RIGHT?! I just got into these fandoms last year (although I haven't seen GK either) and they're amaaaaazing. And I see very little wank. It's just awesome and creative and moving and so fun. <3 (But it does make me feel like a terrible Quaker sometimes. :\)

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Watched them all. BoB was so good. GK was ok (didn't get interesting until halfway). Pacific... trainwreck and then some (best part was the intro...).

I've never looked too deep into the fandoms, but I'm surprised Pacific isn't full of wank. I mean, it's hard to live up to BoB, but it utterly failed in its own right. Everytime I've peeked into the fandoms of either there is undoubtedly some argument over how BoB is better than Pacific and why it's such crap. I blame the writing. It could've been so much better. :/

[identity profile] augustbird.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
this comment makes me really sad. :(

i personally thought that the pacific was an amazing show and that it's very different from and cannot really be compared to band of brothers. band of brothers was very company-based and a lot about it was about the camaraderie between the men. on the other hand, the pacific was more about the individual characters and their internalized struggles and how they dealt with the war. to compare the two would be to oversimplify the nuances of each show and trivialize the different messages they were trying to portray. i think to say that "it utterly failed in its own right" is an overstatement because there are many people who took a lot from the show and many more who truly enjoyed watching it.

i mean, we're all entitled to our own opinions but it's difficult for me to sit back and watch you bash a show and a fandom that you don't even seem to be a part of.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-17 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. There are things I could criticize The Pacific for, like pacing, transitions and some of the character arcs, but so much of it was amazing. The battle scenes were very good, some of the framing for the individual shots was just incredible, and overall, it really captured horrors the men there were living through and how it affected them. All I've heard from so many people is "It wasn't Band of Brothers," but, really, it wasn't meant to be, and I don't think it had to be. I think the problem many people had with it whether they say it or not is that while BoB ends on a hopeful note, emphasizing the uplifting power of the connection between individuals, the ultimate feeling of The Pacific is much bleaker and harder to process.

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't compare the subject matter they're based on. You're right, they're completely different in that aspect. I'm looking at it from a cinematic story progression POV.

The writing just wasn't very good. I understand it was supposed to be about individual soldier struggles, but for me it didn't come off that way. They didn't stick long enough with each character for me to become invested in their struggle. I found myself not caring about the characters and I could barely remember their names. No depth and forgettable.

Yes, the special effects were phenomenal when they happened. Perhaps I play too many video games and I know that pretty graphics doesn't equal a good game.

Anyways, it is my opinion and you have yours. :P I was just saying that I'm surprised there isn't more wank in the fandom. When I watched both (quite close together) I had waddled around in each fandom and found a lot of people like me who were disappointed with The Pacific. Obviously it's different now and the naysayers have all dissipated trying to forget the whole thing happened XD

[identity profile] augustbird.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
i think to ignore the subject matter is to ignore a good majority of the differences between the pacific and band of brothers. i would say that the quality of writing for both the pacific and band of brothers was about the same. i'm sad that you weren't as invested in their story as many others were--i'd counter that the stories presented in the pacific were even more moving than the stories presented in band of brothers because they focused more on human vulnerabilities and the psychological effect of war on each character than band of brothers did.

to each their own though!

all of the people that i've met in the year i've been part of both fandoms are lovely mature people and not the type to needlessly stir up wank. :)

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have a number of friends on my flist who are fans of BoB and The Pacific, and I've never seen any wank about either of them.

Heh.

See, I fell in love with Generation Kill about 5 minuts into it and mainlined the entire miniseries over one very amazing afternoon- and then dove headfirst into the fandom. I love almost every single character, there's awesome writers, and sweet Jesus, the eyecandy is AWESOME.

I couldn't make it through the first part of BoB or the Pacific because I just...IDK. The characters didn't grab me and I was bored. And then there's the fact that I can't handle fic or fandom around BoB or the Pacific. Maybe it's because I relate WWII so strongly with my Grandfathers, but I find the idea of sexy fic about either of those minis to be kind of gut wrenchingly disgusting. (Totally each to their own! This is clearly my own deal, and I love that they work for others.)

That said, oh my god, OP, watch Gen Kill. It's amaaaaazingly good.

This secret made me happy 'cause it's so true! Best fandom I ever stumbled across ♥

WOOOOOOOOORD. HBOwar fandom fucking rocks :DDDD (watch GK! It's good. not as good as the other two in my opinion but very good, and hell, it was an entirely different war)
