there's a really amazing part of hetalia fandom and a really really godawful one. the godawful one is just a million times louder. find the places where the sane people hang out, stick around them, and you're less likely to turn into one of the rabid frightening fans?

The fact you are aware of the distinction between rational, sane fans and the crazy ones who are 100xs louder than the sane ones is a pretty good indicator you aren't and won't become, one of the said crazy ones.

An anon above me said it best, there are places with some really amazing people, writers, and artists. Just stick to those places as best you can. And it's really difficult sometimes to ignore the crazy, but if you have a bunch of awesome people around you, it lessens the sting.

Generally people transition from insane fan to rational human being, not the other way around.
Are there crazy people in the Hetalia fandom? Yes. They are fourteen and stupid.* Hopefully they grow out of it. If they don't it's not Hetalia's fault that they're immature.
I'd suggest stepping back from online Hetalia fandom for a bit and just interacting with your friends if this is really getting to you.

*I am paraphrasing "Sassy Gay Friend," I realize that there are rational fourteen year-olds in the world.

Focus on the good things, stick with the sane people and you will be fine. I can't tell you how often the rabid fans put me off when I see them, but I will myself to ignore them. It's really the best thing to do. Stupid people are going to behave stupidly regardless of whatever fandom they are in. The fact that Hetalia is getting an increasingly larger fandom means more and more stupid fans are joining. Please just ignore it.
Eventually the fandom size may wind down and we'll be back to more sane people.

People keep talking about the wank and general lack of sanity/civility supposedly running rampant in Hetalia fandom...I've seen some now and again, but by and large I honestly have not seen very much at all. Granted I don't go on the kink memes, so it's entirely possible that there's an entire surging torrent of it out there that I'm bypassing.
