Sherlock is not a good role-model when it comes to health (the book version is a cocaine addict). You should see a doctor about your insomnia. There are some non-habit-forming sleep aids out you could try.

It is a fantastic show, though.

Bit not good, yeah!

But on the other hand, if anxiety about not being able to get to sleep is contributing to not being able to get to sleep (I know that's at least partly how it works for me...) then maybe it's not so much of a bad thing? And hey, whatever makes you feel good! :D

Insomnia's a bitch. I have it too. There are just not enough hours in the day and I feel like sleeping is such a time waster... Even though I know it's not. :/ But it isn't healthy.

I bought a shit ton of chamomile tea and sip on it when I feel like I should probably try to sleep soon. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it calms me down and gets in my head that it's sleep tiem. I've tried meditating too. Again, it's hit or miss. Exercise helps too. I tried that after I read Charles Dickens had bad insomnia and would take long walks and that may have helped exhaust his body physically to allow him to get to sleep.

That's... really just fine. You can't worry away insomnia, and trying to "force" sleep tends to just make it worse. Prescription drugs don't work, especially over the long run, and sleep training is the worst thing ever and would qualify as torture under the Geneva Convention.

I made peace with my insomnia by just letting it do what it was going to do. It's not like doctors have any real idea how to prevent or treat it, so why worry about something you can't control and can barely influence?

I have to disagree. It really depends on what's causing the insomnia and if there's an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. Like, in the past I suffered for years from insomnia that was due to untreated depression and anxiety, and trying to ignore that was a bad idea. At other times (LIKE RIGHT NOW GODDAMN) it's just been caused by too much caffeine. I'd give suggestions (more exercise, less caffeine, chamomile tea in the evening) but I don't know what the OP may have already tried. So my only suggestion for the OP is to just try to identify the cause if you haven't already, and see if there's something you can do to address it.

[identity profile] foxtoast.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming OP has already taken the basic steps to rule out treatable causes like depression or evening caffeine. If it's not a symptom of something else treatable or caused by diet, you're pretty much just stuck. Some people have some luck with exercise, etc, but they're in the minority. For people like me there is literally nothing that "works" for more than 48 hours, and the insomniacs with whom I commisersate say the same thing.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Most people need 8 hours of sleep. Some people don't. Insomnia's only a problem if failing to get to sleep at night is interfering with the way you function during the day. (And it may mean that you're one of the people who is going to be perfectly happy working the night shift -- which can be very good, paycheck-wise, in the right fields.)

Is it worth mentioning to your doctor next checkup? Yeah. But as long as you're productive and contented during your waking hours I wouldn't worry too much.

gah that microscope. I know maybe he hasn't adjusted everything yet in the hypothetical word, but the stage is way too low and the specimen isn't actually under the lens...if you're going to pose a photo just think about it a little.

Not worrying about it is more likely to fix it than fretting :)

That's really good that you found a way not to worry about insomnia.
although, it's not good not to worry about it because insomnia's a serious health issue, it's okay to find reassurance in something that makes you feel okay.
(sorry, but i'm a newbie sherlock fan, and he's kind of helped me a lot as well.)
