Well, you don't know when those fics were written. If they were all written back when the show still aired on CN and there's no current fan output, I'd say it still counts as rare. Just because a fandom was once massively active, doesn't mean that new material isn't rare.

Maybe it's because most fics are old and the fandom is kind of inactive, so it used to be popular even though now is kind of rare? IDEK.

That fandom boomed years ago. 20k of those were probably written before you were even born the year 2007.

More than 50 YYH fics were posted to FFN in the last week.

I have several fandoms which contain fewer than twenty fics each, total.

My issue isn't with YYH fandom, it's with the fact that someone would nominate that for a rare fandom exchange.

I see your point. Believe me - I know that feel. But... maybe look at it this way? 95% of those submissions were probably fairly low-quality, or only read in certain cliques. (Oh, those YYH cliques. And upon checking, yeah, most of those look absolutely horrible.)

Plus, that fandom has been a whole lot slower than it used to be. Maybe someone is just trying to nostalgia a little? YYH hasn't been mainstream for years. It's not like someone came in asking for FMA or anything.

Eh, I'm not trying to argue. But some people have different definitions of "rare fandom," and keeping an open mind is probably the best option. If everyone gets upset that A, B, and C have a certain amount of traffic, that'll just kill the spirit of the exchange. Or maybe I'm just missing the point.

A fandom with a lot of dross isn't the same as a rare fandom, though.

I don't know; I guess I just wish that people who request non-rare fandoms in these contexts would own up and say "Yes, I realise that this isn't rare, it's just that not a lot of good fic is being written for it now and I would like some (even though a lot of good fic has already been written for it, albeit years ago)", instead of indulging in all sorts of definitional contortions so that their fandom can be considered rare.

I mean, I don't think every single fandom should be scrutinised; there's a lot of grey between 'impossibly obscure' and 'wildly popular'. But something with 20k+ fics simply isn't 'rare'. It may be 'currently unpopular', or even 'inactive' (neither of these labels even apply to YYH). But fic for it isn't hard to find.

If you're talking about the community I think you are, then the moderator seemed very excited about the nomination of that particular fandom. That said, I do agree with you -- rare fandoms should be rare. However... when I finally get around to submitting my nominations, I will include at least one fandom that I personally don't consider to be truly rare. Why? Because I want to make sure that I won't be requesting fandoms that no one else has even heard of (much less offered to write). It's happened to me in Yuletide before, and this is after all a significantly smaller exchange.

Idk. For me YYH is certainly not rare since I was there in the (relative) heydays but for fans of later generations it might actually count. Lots of them may have heard of it, but never actually checked it out.
