I think there's extraterrestrial life out there, but it's probably algae, or bacteria. The chances of there being other human or humanoid life anywhere else in the universe is exceedingly rare. In fact, the fact that we even exist at all is pretty remarkable, given all of the conditions that had to occur for that to happen.

I was always annoyed that Star Trek had like a million humanoid races but no sentient races of any other kind, like cetaceans or lizards or crustaceans or something. The idea of that many humanoid races existing in this universe is ridiculously unlikely, not to mention anthropocentric.

Star Trek actually had an in-universe handwave for that, actually. Apparently way back when the galaxy was basically empty and there was only one intelligent species, who were humanoid, and they went around and basically seeded a bunch of planets. Or something like that, I haven't seen that episode in probably close to 15 years.

I do vaguely remember an episode of TNG where the crew of the Enterprise met a member of that species, or the common ancestor of all humanoid life in the galaxy -- something along those lines. I haven't seen this episode since I was a kid, and I've never caught a rerun of it, so my memory of it is hazy. I forgot about it until you made this comment, actually.

When it comes to planets with life, we're working from a sample group of one and have examined a negligible percentage of the universe. We can't coherently say that the Goldilocks zone is even always a prerequisite to life. Mathematically speaking, we can't deduce anything from that about the probability of life elsewhere.

Which I think is pretty exciting.

I agree. I absolutely hate it (because I would love nothing better than for Star Trek, Doctor Who, etc. to be "real" in the sense that other intelligent beings are something we could potentially come into contact with), but I really don't think the chances of that are high. Most likely, we are the only intelligent life in our (relatively quite young) universe.
