This is beautifully said, and very true. I've felt the same way as the OP about various fantasty/action/adventure series throughout my life, including Supernatural. So I joined the Peace Corps and am now learning arabic and going to grad school in hopes of becoming an international journalist with a focus on conflict zones -- aka being in the middle of riots and being shot at in foreign countries. I'm STOKED.

Point being, as ameranth said, just because you can't go hunting monsters in an Impala and saving the world doesn't mean that you can't have the life you want in a more realistic sense.

That's awesome! I love it when people go after their dreams. My sister did two years in the Peace Corps - in Moldova. From what I understand, it was a love/hate relationship. She's said she would never trade those years for anything, but at the same time she wouldn't relive those years for anything. Ha.

Go right ahead! :-) I just finished with the Peace Corps in Ecuador, so my entries won't be as exciting for the moment (though not as depressing either. I didn't have the greatest experience).
