I love this movie so much... It's fascinating.

I like a lot of things that aren't PC. And they're sort of fascinating as a couple...

I think you can definitely enjoy something that isn't PC. I also love this movie, and appreciate the "freak show" culture up to the early 20th century, partly because it reveals some of the inherent patterns of humanity. We always tend to use those whom we see as inferior, and I think it'd be very hard to actually appreciate this movie without admitting to this and to our other flaws that are shown. I think it's a much better movie if you don't just watch it to laugh at the "freaks."

It's interesting you mention pre-20th Century "freak show" culture because I recently did a paper on it and was surprised to find that most "freaks" weren't exploited and even enjoyed their jobs because it gave them fame and required so little work (most got paid around 100 pounds a week because of the humiliation they had to undergo.) It was really interesting.

Fantastic movie! Don't feel bad for liking it!

Whew, that's a misleading poster.

Whether or not it's PC, it's impressive how well it still works!

Hey, I'm right with you.

[identity profile] toiffag.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
God that movie freaked (ha!) me out when I first saw it!!!

(Then again, I was around 7. My dad probably needs to check his rating system...)

PC or not, a more than a few disabled people I know agree with that sentiment- and IMO that's more important than whether or not non-disabled folks think it might be offensive.

Everything I know about this movie I learned from The Dreamers.

Actually, for the time period, it seemed like a pretty sensitive handling of everything. The "normal" people were the bad guys, the "freaks" were all good people, nice and sociable, who appreciated honesty and integrity.
