aw, boo

I'm an oldschool Kirk/Spock-loving-til-I-die Trekkie and after the new (BRIGHT FUN DELIGHTFUL) movie came out, like you said, the fandom totally exploded and suddenly Kirk/McCoy was the bigger ship. Was I pissed? Nope. Cause the movie made me dig on it too. Am I suddenly NOT into K/S anymore? HELL NO. But....idk, I guess I'm just easy. Multishipping's more fun than being bitter. There's still a LOT of Legolas/Gimli out there! (And the Extended Editions of the movies put a lot more of their relationship in, which I so love.)

I'm an old school K/S shipper who ships Kirk/McCoy in the new movie because Kirk especially and Spock to a lesser but still notable extent are honestly different characters with different backgrounds and thus different relationships in the reboot movie. Hell, the reboot made me ship TOS!Kirk/Spock more, I just really intensely don't like Reboot!Kirk/Spock. Search me. But I don't think it's a comparable situation to the LOTR books/movies.

other than your last sentence, that's exactly my point - the reboot is a different animal to the original series. The characters are different, their relationships are different, which is why I think it's a reasonable analogy to the LOTR books and movies. To a way lesser degree, but just look around this thread to find how many people are upset that Gimli was made more of a comic relief character in the movies (also, look how much less time and development Merry and Pippin got).

also, I can't DISLIKE reboot Kirk/Spock, it's so Pride-and-Prejudice-y "we hate each other we hate each other oh wait, grudging respect.......goddammit I kinda like you" :D but it's still nothing like their dynamic in TOS or the other movies. But that indeed is what multishippin's for!

I shipped Kirk/McCoy before the 2009 movie came out - not exclusively, the Kirk/Spock love is impossible to ignore and also formed about 90% of fandom - but I don't think it was invented by the film or completely lacking in subtext from TOS...

That said, I'm a multishipper :D so I've never understood all the OTP-war stuff.

not invented, hell no, there was Kirk/Bones around before but nowhere neeeeeeeeear as much as there is now...before the movie, I think the popularity of Big Three ships went like this: Kirk/Spock >>>>>>>>>>>> Spock/McCoy >> Kirk/McCoy. It was there, but not a lot, so it kicks ass that it's everywhere now! (Shame about Spock/Bones, though, it's kind of a wee darkhorse ship of mine that I wish more people were writing these days).

[identity profile] haveloved.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Is Kirk/McCoy really the more popular ship? Forgive me, I have very little experience with the original series and really only know the reboot. I couldn't get behind Kirk/Spock except in joking, but I saw some slash potential between Kirk/McCoy and read some fic, and I sort of passively slash them now. I still always thought that Kirk/Spock was the more popular pairing, though! (Although I assume that maybe Spock/Uhura overtook it after the reboot? Again, I'm sorry, my knowledge of this fanbase is really nil.)

[identity profile] oaktree89.livejournal.com 2011-05-28 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
In short, yes. Kirk/McCoy and K/S probably rival each other in terms of, er, adherents, but in my experience there isn't any animosity between camps. (I ship both, for example, though I prefer the former.) I think if Spock/Uhura wasn't a canon pairing, reboot!K/S would probably be even more popular than it is.

Spock/Uhura isn't unpopular, though it gets less attention because it's a) canon and b) it's het. Though I did read one really good Spock/Uhura fic a couple years ago; I wish I could remember who wrote it...

No worries! to be honest, the reboot-fandom has a really impressive range. You can pretty much find fic for ANY SHIP, even with characters from the Original Series who didn't actually show up in the movie (like Nurse Chapel). But yeah, reboot!Kirk/Bones is definitely more popular than reboot!Kirk/Spock. Spock/Uhura's pretty big, Chekov/Sulu's pretty big, there's a lot of smaller kinda-random ships that get some time, K/S does have its own corner but it's not The Big Ship like it was before the movie. Still, all this variety is nice!
